Bridge Disaster

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Bridge Disaster

Post by CoolBreeze »

Today I saw the result of the blue paint on the I-64 bridge here in Charleston. It is without a doubt the most hideous thing I've ever seen in my fair city, and that includes the tacky canopy over Haddad Riverfront Park. That blue reminds me of some industrial parts of Detroit in the late 50s. It's dark and foreboding. It sticks out like a sore thumb. It's just the worst color possible, and we now have to live with it for the next 20 God awful years
.
While I'm no fan of either Marshall nor WVU (or any team for that matter) I cant help but think Marshall's green would have been a MUCH better choice of color for the bridge. At least it would have blended-in with our beautiful trees and hills. But what an eyesore that BLUE is!

Hey, like Rich-Rod, the WVU IT-geeks found a way to cheat and win...and look what you got...another disaster!

Maybe it's just me, but I think using the term "bridge disaster" for that paint color trivializes the very real bridge disaster in West Virginia's and Ohio's past.

It's called satire, and a damned good use for the term in this case.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.--The coverings have come off the top of the Fort Hill Bridge, revealing the new look of the state's most heavily traveled span.

Workers are still busy painting the underside of the bridge, but travelers and city residents now have a good idea of what it will look like when finished.

Some residents said they are happy that the bridge is getting a facelift, even if the color isn't exactly what they had in mind. Others find the color garish.

Last year, the state allowed residents to vote on the paint color. Residents were offered a choice of dark blue, green, light blue, maroon or gray.

The vote quickly became an outcropping of the bitter rivalry between Marshall University and West Virginia University. Marshall fans supported green, while WVU fans supported dark blue.

In the end, dark blue was the victor, with 55,727 votes. Green received 40,273 votes.

But the color of the bridge isn't classic Mountaineer blue. The state Division of Highways has said all along that green and blue were not selected as options because of school colors.

DOH spokesman Brent Walker reaffirmed that statement on Monday.

"It was never in our minds designed to be anything other than a dark blue," Walker said. "The public created that situation."

Although he attended both WVU and Marshall, area attorney Rusty Webb is a Marshall fan. He hates the color of the bridge, but he said it has nothing to do with his loyalties to the Thundering Herd.

"It's tacky and it's embarrassing," he said. "They should have painted it some kind of neutral color."

Webb recently moved to Kanawha City. He said he's glad to be on the other side of town so that he doesn't have to see the bridge every day.

It does look darker and duller than WVU blue.
It could be Michigan blue.

I will say this.. I like the new color of the Fort Hill bridge better than the crappy yellow I471 bridge in Cincinnati.

That's too light for Michigan blue--looks more like Cal-Berkley colors. Michigan is really dark.

Check Michigan website.
They have several shades of official blue.
The athletic blue is close to the bridge blue.

This blue is really dark. Darker than the photo shows. As we have ramps going for many blocks in all directions, this will look like Toledo before it's over.

R,G,B values = 0,0,128.
What are the R,G,B values of the bridge paint?
Call the state road commission and ask.
