A Jackson County mother was arrested Saturday after telling police she had refused to stop her 5-year-old son from repeatedly assaulting and urinating on his disabled grandmother.
The victim, who called 911 for help, later told officers her daughter sat on the couch and watched television while the beatings occurred.
Deputies R.H. Mellinger and B.L. Varney of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department went to the residence on Washington Road in Sherman, north of Ravenswood, after the 911 call was received about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
There they found the alleged victim, Alice F. Hatcher, 58, whom the officers described as "obviously hysterical" with visible bruising and abrasions on her arms and legs, according to a criminal complaint written by Mellinger.
Police said the older woman had been released from the hospital seven days earlier and was confined to a wheelchair and walking aid as she struggled with debilitating health issues.
She lived at the residence with her daughter Jessica Hatcher, 21, and 5-year-old grandson.
She told the officers her grandson had been continually assaulting her that morning as a result of "simple parenting-type issues that arose from his deviant behavior," the complaint said.
She said all of this occurred as her daughter refused to attempt to gain control of the child.
The grandmother said she was sitting in her chair inside the residence when the child grabbed her walker and began to strike her with it. He then slapped her several times and spit on her, she told officers.
When she attempted to fend off the boy with her cane, he pried it away from her and began to beat her with it.
She said she repeatedly cried out to her daughter, who was lying only feet away on the couch, to restrain the child.
She said her daughter ignored her requests for help, saying she "can't do anything with him" and continued to watch television.
The older woman eventually was able to lock herself in her bedroom in an attempt to protect herself from the child. However, the boy punched and kicked several holes in the door and gained entry to the room.
At that point, the boy allegedly threw a metal aerosol can at his grandmother and struck her with it, the complaint said.
The grandmother said she then was able to make it to her wheelchair and began exiting the residence through the front door in an attempt to lock herself in her car.
Her grandson was able to catch up with her, however. She told officers he struck her with a mop and knocked her to the ground. After she fell, her grandson stood over her and urinated on her back, the complaint said.
When she was able to get back onto her feet, she made it to a phone to call 911.

Given that the kid was doing this to the grandmother and not the mother, and given that the mother had such a cavalier attitude about it, one must wonder what sort of reinforcement the kid got for "venting his little frustrations" on the elder woman. And from whom.
This behavior is not something in which most children would spontaneously engage, needless to say. What is this child seeing or hearing away from the grandmother that would suggest to him that such behaviors are well and good? Perhaps the mother should be caned.

I'm thinking of starting a new segment on my show, "Only in West Virginia".
