Gray Television NBC affiliate WSAZ Charleston-Huntington, W.Va. (DMA 63), has hired Stephanie Schelkun as weekend anchor. Stephanie will anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on WSAZ as well as the weekend myZtv Ten O'clock News on its MNT subchannel. Along with anchoring, Schelkun will also be reporting three days a week.
Schelkun has spent the last two years as the morning anchor at WSEE Erie, Pa. She also was the business reporter/anchor for One Caribbean Weather, interned at WCAU Philadelphia in the Investigative Unit and worked at Entertainment Tonight in New York City.
Schelkun is a graduate of Penn State University with degrees in broadcast journalism and business.

I guess she didn't notice, during her visit to the station for her interview, the half assed operation they have going on now that ALMOST everyone who made WSAZ the station it is today has either been let go due to downsizing or run the other direction in search of greener pastures. It's almost laughable now that the way that place is run. During any type of crisis the first question that is asked is "do we need to call out overtime or can we overload another intern?"
And no, she's definitely NOT hotter than ralston....

Are you kidding me? Name me a current main anchor that's been there less than 10 years? Ralston is the only one I can think of and she's been there more than 5. Johnson, Adkins, Nicholas, Irr, Cline, Murray, Morehouse, Cavalier. There isn't another station in the market with a more stable staff than WSAZ.
She's working for a powerhouse that maintains an insane market share year after year after year. By the way, here's a newsflash, every station in the country is doing more with less these days.
umm, deborah linz, and mark martin have each been mains at wchs for well over 5 years now.... SAZ's collapse is gonna be fast and hard and you guys are gonna be caught with your pants down when it happens I've noticed 13 lately somewhat trying to step up their game, but they're gonna be dead last for a whle..... and as I've claimed for the last few years, as the older people die off so will SAZ's deathgrip on the market....

You would think but history tells us that it's not true, WSAZ has dominated the market through several generations. This is due to the shear area covered in parts of the market others only dream their signal covers. Now WSAZ doesn't dominate in the WV metro market, that goes to WCHS. WCHS does a nice job selling the affluence of the metro market and the quality of the numbers but ad agencies buy numbers, cost per thousand or per point, so I'd take the market coverage over the metro coverage. So long as WSAZ position themselves as the dominate TV they'll probably hold on. As Genlock says "Market Leader indeed"

So you mention 2 people at CHS to the 8 I mentioned at WSAZ? Please..... Not to mention the deep community ties from people like Rob Johnson and Keith Morehouse. These two offer 2 generations of local news/sports coverage, that's unmatched. Others have lived and worked in the market for decades in some cases.
The numbers don't lie, WSAZ is a 10,000 lb. gorilla in the market and that's not going to change anytime soon. Generations continue to die off, move away and the WSAZ dominance continues. WSAZ is a brand like McDonalds.
CHS and 13 have tried everything but there's something to be said for the stability of WSAZ. Just a piece of advice, don't hold your breath waiting for the "collapse" of WSAZ...not gonna happen in your lifetime.

More importantly, all of the people listed above are good at their job and are good people. I worked with every one of them except for Susan Nicholas when I was at WSAZ, and I went to a Halloween party in 2000 at Susan and Doug's when they were still at WOWK and found them both to be friendly and welcoming, despite the fact that I worked for the competition.
There's something to be said for continuity, particularly when there is a common thread of professionalism and quality of work within the group.
I watched WSAZ's news last night. Miss Stephanie did a commendable job, and certainly Tony Cavalier deserves to be the dean of area weatherpeople. Honestly, in my humble opinion, their news could give much-bigger market stations a real run for their money.
Also, I watched WOAY's 6 p.m. Sat. nite offering. All in all, they do a good job. Of course, not anywhere close to WSAZ, but actually respectable. The blonde-haired weather dude was the weakest link, stumbling along and correcting himself at least two times. Anchor Sarah Machi (sp?) and the sports guy, who did a good feature on Hokie football, will probably move on asap, as they have both have game.
