U.S falling behind in cell phone technology

You remember Steve Jobs claiming in 1997 that the original iPhone was five years ahead of the competition?

Now AT&T's CTO has been bragging that "in the past 3 years, the US has been the clear leader when it comes to phones, design, operating systems and applications." Like a red rag to a bull - top industry analyst Tomi Ahonen here rips into the claims and points out the innovation from Japan and Finland, among others. His metrics also point to the USA now rising to 19th in the world in terms of mobile adoption and technology, now level with, ahem... Portugal.

Have we ever been ahead, of Europe and Japan especially? For years you've been able to travel through all of Western Europe and have solid signal even in tunnels and buildings. Dropped calls are a rarity there.

Large parts of the USA have very good cell phone service.
Here in "third-world-America", we do not.
A lot of the countries in Europe are very small and have concentrated populations.
That makes them easier to cover. Like Elbonia, for instance.
I doubt if WV will get service anything like most of Europe.
The FCC will not force the issue on the cell-phone carriers.

I've said many times that the U.S. is a third world country when it comes to technology.

South Korea and Japan has had video phones for years now...and the carriers have to bandwidth to handle it. 3G is old tech. Many countries already have 4G standards widely available, which averages 6-10 mb/s.

Yet, many in WV don't even have 3G available to them. Many places are still stuck with antiquated Edge and 1X data services, if any service at all.

By the time we all get 3G, everyone else will be doing 4G things, like streaming 720p YouTube videos and video conferencing. The 3G backhaul pipes will clog up fast with that stuff, making connections unreliable. Esp during peak hours.

With that said, we still get some premium devices, even though the cellular networks are inadequate to handle their demands. Look at iPhone sales worldwide...

Maybe it would help if the FCC and cell-phone companies were required
to demonstrate how the Muslim culture and followers have contributed
in some way to the advance in communications technology.
I mean, who knew it was so easy to use a common cell-phone as a
trigger to detonate a roadside bomb?
