President Obama will be handed the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight if the Senate votes for the infamous Internet ‘kill switch’ bill, which was approved by a key Senate committee yesterday and now moves to the floor.

I just could not imagine killing the internet. At my company, if we lose connectivity for 10 minutes, everyone takes a shit. No one knows how to use a fax machine or a telephone anymore.

It will probably never happen, but just the perception that the president -- ANY president -- could flip the kill switch at any time, can have a chilling, intimidation effect.

Internet security needs to remain privatized. There are already kill switches at many major traffic servers that will shut down in case of a cyber attack. And they do happen frequently. We just don't hear about them.

It's also ironic that the same weasels who are dead silent now would have rioted in the streets if Bush would have tried something similar -- even under the guise of "protection".

This is an unprecedented power grab on the last bastion of free speech left.

I'm not a birther. I don't care about his religion (or lack of). They are meaningless distractions. He is the president of the United States. I focus on his policies.

History has always proven that any government power that can be abused, WILL be. Which is why I am amongst the minority of conservatives that have always opposed the PATRIOT act, from the beginning (unless it had a "only applies to non US citizens" clause). Obama is proving me right on this, he is doubling DOWN on the Bush administration on misusing it, and they will be using it against conservatives for political reasons.

Pushing the "Internet Kill Switch" would destroy the economy in less than 2weeks. Banks would not be able to process transactions. Companies could not process payroll. Most of the consumer economy would be scuttled at the same time by closing the avenues to process monetary transactions.

I actually never heard about till this year. I did bitch about the so-called Patriot Act. And the warrantless wiretaps and many other things that actually did happen. I just find it hard to believe any President, even a moron like W, would hit the kill switch on the internet without the nation being in extremis.
