So I go to my local City National Bank branch today to wire some money to Germany. I have the wire information printed out. I tell the bank official that we'll have to convert the Euro amount to US Dollars.
She says:
What's a Euro?
I said "you don't know what a Euro is?" Then I go on to explain the worlds main currencies to her: The Dollar, the Euro, The British Pound, and the Yen. She stares at me blankly.
I ask her if she has access to the internet, and she say she does. I say "great, all we have to do is convert it there". At this point she advises me that a higher power had better get involved and so she leaves to talk to a supervisor. I watch them for a couple of minutes and decide that maybe I'd better join them. I'm asked for the German banks name, and I tell them that it's the first line on the page. They then want another question answered that I couldnt, without accessing my e-mail account. I ask if there's a computer connected to the internet that customers can use. She says no... that not one bank in the valley had that feature. I said " so now I have to drive home, access my e-mail, and drive all the way back here". Yes. Amazing, I said... I can use a computer at the cheapest motel in the phone book, but not a bank.
There's something to be said about WV always being behind the times, but when a bank official doesn't know what a Euro is.... it's worse than I thought.

And by now you're probably on a terrorist watch list.

Heck, Huntington Bank in downtown Columbus used to exchange most major currencies with only a minor charge.
Though last time I was there, it was to convert a wad of Deutsche Marks to dollars (2002).

A poorly-traded currency, one dollar equals one loonie, and a little more than a Swiss Franc.
At least it is not shrinking in value as fast as the Euro.
