This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.
I've been a student of tampon commercials for 30 years. Believe it or not, these are one of the best yardsticks of where society's head is on any given decade (no pun intended) via broadcast standards.
The old days of girls wearing white spandex while doing cartwheels or riding bikes (to prove that they don't leak or fall out I guess) are over. And I can always tell if a man or woman wrote the commercial. These commercials are hilariously vague and funny, so naturally a new crop of commercials has appeared, written (of course) by a woman and very edgy. Take this one for instance:
Couple of women on my e-mail list made the following comments:
I love that reality check one...REAL women HATE those stupid commercials, and we all know they
were written by men who don't have a clue.
I used to have a t shirt that said..."I have PMS and a handgun,
any questions??" and I wore it all the time. THAT is what having a period is about to women..not white
spandex, butterflies and dancing.

Oh how I love these ads. Oh how I've hated regular kotex ads.
How a 20 year old, doing cart wheels in white spandex came to represent periods I'll never know and I'm the first to admit I looked to see if she leaked!!!!
My mom reminded me though of how far we've progressed. She remembers when she saw the first Kotex ad. She said she was embarrassed and left the room because in her day a woman went into hiding and never even mentioned 'the curse'.
I do like how the Ojibwai women dealt with their periods. They went into the 'women's' hut and spent a week bathing, resting and hiding. I could sooo get into that once a month.
I think the only company that has a chance of making a good 'period' commercial is a whiskey company. A few shots of a smooth whiskey and you won't mind that you feel like your insides are being ripped apart by demented hamsters trying to escape.
