My grandfather fondly remembers his days helping the Leonards fill out DX reception-reports.
Most of them were actually from Pound Ridge but, given the ERP, it was still considered DX and a QSL was returned - usually hand-delivered - to the individual making the request.
That unfortunate statement Howie Leonard made to Mjr. Edwin Armstrong haunted Howie until his death. (Leonard's of course - Armstrong's was kinda' the reason FOR the grief).
The rodent-problem near the transmitter was a constant source of headaches. Mice made their way to what they thought were banannas, but instead, the power-supply for the modified spark-gap transmitter that was the hot-standby radiotelephone-box. Any transmitter with that pesky VSWR circuit would have to be heavilly-modded on both the AM and the FM because of the special design of the tower and antenna. One engineer quit - and I believe he was going to pursue a career in plumbing - because he was heard to say upon leaving, "...you could load up a lead-pipe for a better-match with that transmitter!"

After the 49.9 station went off the air, they sold the transmitter - only to find out when they were demonstrating it to the new buyer who wanted for scrap - the second-harmonic was 20db higher than the fundamental - and they could have been in the NEW FM band broadcasting on 99.8!

Oh what you learn when it's too late.
