Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
Yeah I am fat.
I refuse to be told how to live my life by a fucking Euroweenie or a "President" who can't produce a birth certificate (which I can produce and have HAD to produce for everything from high school enrollment at St Joe to little league baseball when I played it).
I can prove I was born in Ashland, Ky on 7/2/1972. Which means I can opine on the Tri-State. Jamie Oliver? No. Obama? He can comment on Kenya.

Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
Gotta remember it is just "TV"...( and we all know that our entire region "has a definite problem" with weight & health.)
I am watching the show because it is filmed here in Huntington, and I wonder if the producers are kinda selecting clips to tell the story as they wish.... Really Huntington comes across as being a nice place in the show so far..... other than making some individuals appear a bit narrow minded and unwelcoming, but that probably is to set Jamie up as the good guy out to save us all.
However, so far we are looking OK in the show, as the problems Jamie addresses are common all over the US & UK (as Jamie keeps pointing out.) He is just a broadcaster just like we have so many of here in the US, and he has picked up a worthy cause to allow him to have a vehicle to make money off of- and that is how our Anglo-American system works. Ya gotta consider the source, and look beyond the real time passions to see the message beyond the bucks.
I will keep watching Jamie, and I am making a point to not get my feelings hurt as a "West Virginian." I am trying to focus on the "big picture." If it does get some of us across Appalachia and the USA to become more conscious of being fit it may be worth tolerating a little rudeness.

I have watched and enjoyed the first couple of episodes. I especially liked the "test" he preformed on some kids at the kitchen whereby he formed some ground chicken carcass into nugget form and deep fried them. Looked good to me.

Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
I'm unimpressed with the whole thing.
First, it's a freaking TV show, and every part of it is designed to garner ratings by being controversial, ergo the set-up "interview" with WDGG's Rod Willis. I wouldn't be surprised if the attitude from the cooks at the school was the same scripted deal. The show came to Huntington for the same reason Dawg the Bounty Hunter (and his freak-show family) have a television show and the star isn't some strictly business Plain Jane bail bondsman. The closed-minded "hillbilly people" from the unhealthiest city in America makes for a better backdrop than the dull nothingness of some place like Asheville, North Carolina or Lincoln, Nebraska.
Second, I'm not sold on the fact that school lunches are the reason many of us scale-tippers exist. Our sedentary lifestyle is easily 80% of the problem. The amount of shit food available to the public isn't a new phenomenon; we just sit on our asses all day playing/working in front of a computer screen then we go home and indulge in Netflix, 700 channels of satellite TV, and an endless supply of entertainment from the Nintendo, the X-BOX, and the Wii. Health experts have to beg insulin-dependant diabetics to get off their oversized rear end and take a walk around the block while the disease slowly kills them.
Lumberjacks and oil rig roustabouts don't eat Fresco Tacos and lemon-spritzed broiled chicken with their carefully portioned garden salad with that nasty fat-free dressing to stay in shape. They work for a living. The earlier comment about students at (the old) Huntington High School eating everyday from the Rollyson and Gino's Pizza trucks parked in front of the building sparked a thought I'll credit to Jerry Waters. If you'll pull the yearbooks from that era, almost every kid was height/weight proportionate. Even with all the government-mandated "healthy" lunch offerings, that isn't the case today. You have 4th graders who are morbidly obese. Go figure.
The last thing involves health care. For a verifiable source, I recommend you go to the library and borrow a Physician's Desk Reference. This is a large book that contains more than you'll ever want to know about every drug on the planet. Spend some time reading up on 30 or 40 of the most heavily prescribed medications. You'd be surprised at how many cause weight gain as a side effect -- especially all those childhood ADHD pills and almost every psychiatric medication. A good friend who is a family practice doctor told me he refuses to write prescriptions for obese people with depression unless they are suicidial. His reasoning was that most are depressed because of the social and physical problems that being overweight can cause. Almost every medication he can prescribe actually increases the chances of weight gain although it's supposed to help level out the feelings of depression. His prescription is to go on a sensible diet and join a gym or do something -- anything -- that causes you to burn calories. If the patient is successful in losing weight, the depression will go away with the body fat. And so will the diabetes and the high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
It is difficult, but I am trying to follow my friend's "prescription".

Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
Why be a doctor if you're not going to write scripts for anyone?
Seriously, I wouldn't waste my time or money on a doctor who wouldn't give me anything to help me. If I show up to your office, then I'm there for a reason. Otherwise, I might as well just not go at all...
I understand there are doctors who over-prescribe meds to the point that their patients are zombies, and drugs do not work the same for everybody. But this "holistic" BS is just as bad, IMO. You don't need a medical license for that. Should've been a psychologist instead.
Otherwise, I do agree that exercise is the "best" medicine. But it shouldn't necessarily be the "only" medicine for everyone.

Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
I starting watching the show specifically to see Rod, the rest of the people at Kindred, and Huntington in general.
Rod wearing the black hat is a great dramatic device and he will be rewarded for his excellent performance with a LOT of hate emails.
I ended up liking the show and I hate most "reality" shows.
Oh, and I have no idea where my birth certificate is or if it even exists anymore. Do I get to stay in America or do I have to move to Ireland? I hope I get to stay.

Re: Rod Willis On Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
That's not how it works. Your doctor is supposed to look at the whole picture and recommend the best and most appropriate course of treatment. In this case, the drugs would add to the baseline problem although they might suppress some of the symptoms. The doctor recommended the one course of action that would produce no untoward side effects and actually fix a number of related medical conditions at the same time. That's kind of a Grand Slam if you think about it. You don't go to a doctor and ask for a prescription and get it just because you want it. That's like demanding an "A" from a college professor because you paid for the class, regardless of what your assignment and test grades showed that you earned.AmpedNow wrote:Why be a doctor if you're not going to write scripts for anyone? Illegals should be gunned down soon as they cross the border by automated computer controlled machine gun turrets.Bob Campbell wrote:Get your illegal immigrant ass back to wherever you claim to come from Nunley.
And go eat a salad.
"Yo Quero Border?" "NO MAS NO MAS!"
The border patrol would then be divided up between rounding up the illegals still here, and sending out squads with body bags and technicians to service and reload the turrets.
THAT is how a "smart fence" should work.

HD, don't get me wrong, I agree with the basis of what you are saying but I had to chime in on the comment I quoted. People are somehow under the misconception that we work for our physician. This partially explains why most specialists and some family doctors act like you are a speck of pig shit and they would rather not be bothered to treat whatever irrelevant condition you may have.Hoosier Daddy wrote: You don't go to a doctor and ask for a prescription and get it just because you want it.
When I am treated for something, be it bad cholesterol or whatever, I research the most commonly prescribed medications and check on the copay before my doctor writes the prescription because 9 times out of 10, she will write the most expensive, latest, greatest, multimillion dollar marketed, pill, that is being hawked by the drug reps. Now, I ain't saying this is currupt or wrong in any way, I am just saying that I can't afford that kind of crap unless all other treatments fail. So I tell my doctor what I would like to try and as long as it makes medical sense, she writes it.
If this wasn't the case, and she decided that I would take only what was prescribed, then I would find another doctor.
Of course, what I am saying doesn't apply to all medicines (like pain killers, for example), but your physician works for you and you need to advocate on behalf of yourself and not allow your doctor to cop out.

Up Cow Creek they don't issue birth Certificates, they put one of those red plastic tags in your ear.

That attitude is honed in medical school. The Arrogant Physician is a force to be reckoned with, especially if you are in a position to take orders from one, as in through your employment. The Vexatious Attorney is the only living mammal that can trump the doctor's self-righteous superego.Big Media wrote:People are somehow under the misconception that we work for our physician. I applaud you for doing your homework on prescriptions. I wish everyone took the time to educate themselves on their medical problems, signs and symptoms, the proposed physician-recommended solutions, and what their insurance companies will pay for. It also helps to find out where getting a second opinion might be a worthwhile expense and headache.

Jay, just do what I go. Go to 317 Steakhouse in Logan and order the steak salad and drown it with bleu cheese or ranch dressing, then drink light beer or diet Coke.

True story... One day while the whole "Jamie's Kitchen" thing was up, I saw his whole TV crew exit the place and cross over to 5 Guys (which serves exceptional burgers) which is across the street.StopSet wrote:Jamie is so unhealthy, he had to come to Huntington to eat
Anyone who hasn't tried that in Huntington. Do so.
