He's been at it for like 30 years..He told them almost 2 years ago that he was retiring.. The big suprise is that they have drug their feet this long on a replacement..

Manchin, Clements disagree on AD move

West Virginia University President Jim Clements and Gov. Joe Manchin don't appear to see eye-to-eye on the impending exit of the university's long-time athletic director.

A day after Clements announced a national search to replace Ed Pastilong after two decades as WVU's athletic director, Manchin said he would not have let Pastilong go so soon.

The university and Pastilong announced Wednesday they would honor the terms of a contract signed before Clements took office that put the athletic director in a two-year emeritus position beginning July 1.

Pastilong is still expected to serve as a "key advisor," but Manchin said Thursday he would have kept him on full-time.

"Until I find a person to take me to the next level, I wouldn't let a sure thing go," Manchin said.

Clements said the exact opposite in an interview on MetroNews Talkline.

"Our programs are doing very, very well, which makes it, in my mind, the perfect time to start a national search for the next athletic director," Clements said.

In a separate radio interview, Manchin said, "I have never been one to believe that you pay someone for not working. Eddie wanted to work."

When his contract ends in June, Pastilong becomes the West Virginia AD emeritus for $225,000 a year. He'll receive a $100,000 retention incentive on June 30 and is due $125,000 in deferred compensation over 2012 and 2013.

Manchin pointed to the leadership Pastilong has provided the athletic department.

I think there is a lot of other departments that would be tickled to death to do as well as Eddie Pastilong," Manchin said.

Still, the governor, who has been involved in other college sports arrangements, including sealing the deal for the current Marshall-WVU football series, said he had stayed out of the Pastilong deal and respected Clements' right to make the decision.

"Jim has a right," he said. "I respect that wholeheartedly."

Pastilong joined the WVU athletic department in 1976 and has been in his current position since 1989. He helped lead $85 million in facility renovations, the school's full-time membership in the Big East and a period in which the budget grew from $20 million to three times that today.

But two of WVU's last three presidents have sought to show him the door.

On Feb. 11, 2007, then-President Mike Garrison drafted a letter mapping out plans to get rid of Pastilong and Pastilong signed it exactly one year later. When Garrison resigned in summer 2008, the agreement was called into question. Pastilong was asked often if he'd be interested in revisiting the topic to either delay the emeritus date or removing the condition all together and he almost always answered he'd be open to staying. This week's decision by Clements honors the terms of that contract.

On Wednesday, Clements said the decision was "solely mine as president of the institution" and there were "no outside influences."
