The WV legislature, having fixed all of West Virginia's serious "dead last in everything" issues is now wasting time on this:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- With the term increasingly regarded as a slur, West Virginia's House of Delegates unanimously approved a measure Monday to erase the phrase "mentally retarded" from the state's law books.

The legislation sent to the Senate would replace "mentally retarded" with "intellectually disabled," and "mental retardation" with "intellectual disability."

I hate to tell you geniuses at the Capitol this but.... "intellectually disabled," or intellectually challenged" has been the new buzz words in every joke about the retarded for the last 5 years or more. As a joke... kids say "retarded", and that same joke from an adult is "intellectually challenged".

Here's the thing: Take ANY word or phrase and you can do with it what you will. When a very large group does this, the people affected all of a sudden want those words or phrases changed to something else in order to "remove any stigma". Problem is... the new words or phrases will soon become the same old slurs or jokes that the old ones were. In the meantime, thousands of man hours and hundreds of thousands of (usually taxpayer) dollars have been spent to make some group "feel better".
