Of course, many will say this winter has been brought about due to Global Warming. These kooks will say anything to cover their asses however. Ebbs and flows in the heat-cold have been going on LONG before man ever became industrialized.

But here's the thing: This winter has been a normal old fashioned winter for the most part, for most of us. We haven't had a REAL winter prior to 1993. I remember that year distinctly because I was out in it every day that summer, and had never recalled a heat-spell in my lifetime like we had that year. Both the heat and lack of rain was impressive. I even took photos to document it. The biggest winter in my lifetime was the winter of 77/78. That made what we have right now look like Spring. Prior to that, it's my understand that 1950 was the "big one". Oh sure... we've been dumped-on by snow... or had weeks of ZERO or below for weeks at a time, in between these events. But a good old fashioned winter has been missing for some time. Now that we have one, we cant seem to handle it.

The blizzard of '93 we had 39 inches of snow in Charleston in one day. I-64 was shut down and I had to drive from Hurricane to Charleston for the Monday morning show. It was neat going up to the roadblock and telling the trooper I was a Federally licensed broadcaster who had to go to Charleston to be on the radio. Of course the fact that he already knew who I was didn't hurt. We stayed in the Ramada Inn Sunday night because nobody could get up the hill to the 102 studios except for one guy with a 4 wheel drive (it might have been Mike Edwards). He stayed at the station Sunday night while a bunch of us hung out in the Ramada bar. We did the show via Marti from a hotel room Monday morning. Good times.

btw, Global warming theories predict exactly this kind of extreme weather. That's why it's called science. It makes predictions that can be tested by anyone.

To me, global warming seems to make up rules as it goes. Every time an exception comes up, and someone says: "Well, what about that?", the experts make up some kind of theory that supposedly "explains" why global warming causes 40 inches of snow. It's all crap to me. Then again, Al Gore invented it.

Talk to all the folks on the north side of the Mason-Dixon in Philly. After today, we will tie, if not break, the all time snow accumulation for a season. And that snow was dumped in just three storms.

My fear is that instead of snow, this beast of a storm is going to flip to rain and wash parts of this area from the map like the scenario in December.

Listen.. several days ago as you recall, the "scientists" at the weather bureau predicted a huge snowstorm here within HOURS of it's arrival. As you may recall, many events were canceled that day. Thing is.. we didnt get SQUAT. So if they don't know what's going to happen in a 24 hour window, I sure don't trust a 5, 50 or 500 year prediction.

As I'm sure you know, but because it doesn't serve your extremist political views, the predictions of climatologists are of a global climatic nature. The predictions of meteorlogists are of a short term local nature. So yes, the meteorologists got it wrong. The climatologists, however, did not.
The technique of argument Jerry uses is what they used to call in Logic 101, false logic.
Impying that because A does B, there C must do B. It's also called the "apples and oranges" analogy, comparing two things that may seem directly linked but are not.

Climatologist predictions call for increased swings of extremes as global warming continues and accelerates. That means more extreme local weather, colder, hotter, wetter, drier. As these local events increase in severity, the overall climate continues to warm at ever increasing rates.

Nate, I love you, but you need to check up on global warming. Nobody changes the rules "as they go along". As more information becomes available, theories and predictions are refined.
And, if information comes along that shows it's all a pant load, the theories will be tossed in favor of whatever the data shows.

The anti-science far right extremists like to use this very fact, that science adapts to the data, as an indication that science must be wrong. They use it when discussing any scientific topic that does not conform to their narrow world view. So you'll hear it used in debates about evolution and global warming. They don't have any data to back up their points of view, so they attack the empirical data of the scientific community.
Maybe global warming ( accelerated by humans) is a myth. Maybe evolution is too. Prove it and the theories will change.
It was once widely accepted that the sun revolved around the earth, but the empirical, observable evidence showed it not to be so. It was once widely accepted that the earth was flat. Ditto on the evidence there.
To date, the vast majority of empirical evidence and repeatable experimentation ( if you can't repeat it, it's not science) points to global warming exacerbated by humans. And even though it's cold as a rat's ass in a small part of the northeast US this winter, the world as a whole continues to warm.

I WOULD explain to our parrots of the Conservative movement how Global Warming is a proven aspect of a bigger thing called "Climate Change," and how climate change causes some places to get colder while other places get warmer, but I figured that I would be getting a little too deep for them...
If I learned one thing while I was educating the Rightwingers while Bush was lying his way into a war it's that you just can't stand between the facts and what the blind servants of the Extreme Right WANT to believe... The facts be damned...

That's okay, the "global warming is a myth" folks have already lost the argument, they just don't know it yet. They are slowing down the reaction to it, and that may cost a few hundred thousand lives, but that's not their concern as long as they can't recognise how they're personally affected by it. These are reasons I'll not get rid of our landline service anytime soon.

This winter has been the most brutal we've had since 1996. It hasn't been extremely cold, but it's been relentless snow. The beautiful mountains subject us to brutal upslope snow long after the main storm has moved away. This has been happening tonight.

My friends in DC are crying mercy. I can't ever recall back to back large snowstorms pounding the same areas within days of each other.

Joe Bastardi at Accuweather predicted this snowy winter back in July. The good news is that some long range weather models are predicting a rapid warmup in April leading to an early spring.

I hope so. I'm so sick of this crap.

Vancouver, CA site of the Winter Olympics is suffering through the warmest winter on record, with temperatures 20 degrees above average. They are having to airlift in snow from the mountains via helicopters.
Guess that proves global warming, huh?
Certainly as much as cold in the Northeast disproves it.

btw, according to NASA, those wild eyed tree huggers ( who continued to publish in the face of gov't suppression , editing and threats of firing during the Bush administration), has just released the figures for 2009 and the decade. 2009, second warmest year on record. The decade of the 2000's, warmest decade ever.
