Apple changes the rules of the game once again.

It took a few centuries, but yesterday, the printing press officially became obsolete.

It doesn't look like much on the surface, but the practical uses of this machine is almost infinite.

This is another one of those "How did we ever live without it?" inventions.

YESTERDAY WE WERE TREATED to the spectacle of Apple CEO Steve Jobs attempting to peddle a slow touchscreen netbook without a keyboard for nearly twice the price of anything similar on the market.

It reminded me of my grandfather, a crook who set up a used car business in Durban auctioning dodgy cars to Boers who were not used to that sort of thing. He was so good at it that he once won a bet that he could sell a car without a motor for more than he would get for a car with one in it. The story goes that he did it by emphasising how the motor that shipped in the car limited your options.

When Steve Jobs stood up yesterday with the "Ipad" he clearly was having a laugh.

You can just imagine the board meeting where the idea came up.

Steve: "I am really pissed off with humanity at the moment. I am charging them way over the odds for junk they can pick up for half the price and they think I am a god. I'll bet you I can sell them something totally useless. What is something no one can sell?"

I absolutely LOVE my iPhone... so much so that I am upgrading to "what's next" this summer.

The iPad does nothing for me. Then again, maybe it's pitching to a whole new market and I shouldn't even be looking in its direction.

So cutting edge we can't see it yet, or Newton II? Time will tell.

What I've come to respect about Apple is that they don't play by the rules of the game; they have enough foresight to change them and leverage them in their favor.

Three years after its release, the iPhone 3GS is still the Cadillac of smartphones. The competition is getting closer, but nobody has yet to top it. This is why I swallowed my pride and recently got a 3GS myself. It's the best gadget I've ever owned, and my only regret is waiting so long to get one.

The "gimped" specs of the iPad doesn't matter. Look at the potential practicality of it.

I can see this becoming a must-have device for many businesses and schools, as well as everyday life. It's practical in areas where laptops and smartphones are not.

With netbooks available that can run Windows 7 and Microsoft Office for $300.00 and less, the iPad is a joke and will never see main stream success. The killer app for any computer like device that needs to be successful in business/education needs to have real office for the time being. Perhaps by the end of this year, MS WebOffice will be the new killer app making the iPad a viable device, but until that happens, this thing is much too gimped to be successful. It is nothing more than a big screen iPod Touch. I already have 2 Touch's and I don't need a third that will not fit in my pocket.

They'll really catch on when they're paper thin and flexible. That's only a few years out. At this point, and this is really Kindle right now, it's just like a book, except if you drop your book you can pick it up, if you drop your Kindle you're out 400 bucks ( or whatever the heck it costs). I-Pad seems very bulky to me. But also very cool, probably too hip for the room right now.

Bigger??? Nah. Tumi provides nice, stylish non-murse messanger bags and attaches to carry my Stinkpads and Aspire One netbooks. I happen to have a few.

Deeper pockets??? Yea, considering that the price of the cheapest iPad is $200 more than my investment in my best netbook with 2GB of Ram, 500GB HD, and Windows 7 PRO. Add on my iTunes installation and these devices are very similar in use and purpose.
