I don't understand the hostility.

First of all, this is a show about healthier eating. What the hell did they expect? The average diet around here is worse than unhealthy shit, and anyone with half a brain can see that. So this hostility is unnecessary, if not contrived.

Second, the adults can eat themselves to death if they want. But what's wrong with showing children how to find other alternatives to all the junk they eat?

Finally, any school system that fed my child pizza for breakfast would get an earfull. Even sugared cereals is healthier than that frozen shit.

it's all personal Responsibility Lester, Jamie Oliver is acting like he is the second coming of Jesus. The last time I checked there is a McDonalds in every town in America. Huntington is no different than any other town.....

An apt analogy. Mr. Oliver is a self righteous do-gooder with the added motive of personal profit. How nice. And he is upset he is not universally welcomed with open arms and grateful thanks.

Agreed. My biggest issue with Mr. Oliver isn't the message, it's his holier-than-thou attitude about the whole thing. Huntington (and Appalachia in general) is probably getting tired of being treated like the unwashed masses by snotty, self-promoting urban yuppie do-gooders who ride in to town on their white horse, proclaim us as "lost people", attempt to remake us in their own image, and when that fails, they blow out of town and are never seen again.

Of course, with Simon Cowell being everyone's reality television idol, maybe this in-your-face persona is just for ratings and entertainment. Genuine or not, I still find the whole affair very offensive, even though I agree with the need to eat healthy and lose weight.

Huntington wasn't randomly picked because of the overabundance of "unwashed Appalachian hicks". It was picked because it is the most unhealthy city in America... based on the number of people that die when they shouldn't. Since Jamie Oliver is a cook, and not a cop, he chose Huntington over New York City.

I'm of the mindset posted above... if you're an adult, eat, smoke, dope yourself to death. But if you're letting your kid reach "obese" before they're old enough to know what you've let them do to their bodies... that's beyond child abuse.
