Look for more of this here in America in the near future

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Look for more of this here in America in the near future

Post by CoolBreeze »

I've been to this exact spot many times. The Narva River is more narrow than the Kanawha River, and separates Russia from Estonia:

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia — Russian authorities have broken up a smuggling network that used a professional diver to swim with cigarettes across a river to Estonia, the Russian security service said Monday.

The regional border security department of the FSB -- the successor to the Soviet secret service the KGB -- said the smugglers took the contraband across the River Narva, which marks part of the border between the two countries.

"Cigarettes packed in waterproof material were attached to the diver's suit by rope, and he swam with them to Estonia," the FSB said in a statement.

Russian and Estonian border guards arrested five people, including the 25-year-old diver, in connection with the investigation, the FSB said.

I do this all the time when I drive to Delaware to purchase big dollar value electronics like flat panel TVs and cameras. I also pick up a few six packs of beer (variety not available in PA) and maybe a bottle or two of bourbon.

Cigarettes always been a fun smuggle here. All the tourists fill their trunks before they head back to NJ and NY. I happened to be speaking to a woman from NJ last night (yes, in a bar). A friend bummed a cigarette and she said "At 9 bucks a pack, I don't lend cigarettes anymore".

Don't have to look for this in America in the future... Cigarette smuggling is how Hezbollah got a foothold in the United States... Nothing new..

The Nexus Between Organized Crime and Terrorism: Trafficking in Cigarettes. Abstract: This essay will focus on the nexus between crime and terrorism, with special attention to cigarette smuggling. The nexus between the two will be illustrated by cases studies concerning groups operating throughout the world who use cigarette smuggling as a means to finance their criminal and terrorist activities. Profits from the exploitation of this licit product are used to fund terrorist activities, social unrest and various criminal activities. Case studies include the well documented case involving a North Carolina based Hezbollah cell that used cigarette smuggling to raise money for a terrorist organization in Lebanon; smuggling activities occurring in conflict regions, such as Georgia and other regions within the former Soviet Union; and similar activities in South America, in particular the Tri-border region.
