I've BEEN helping for probably 25 years. So has every other American that WORKS. I didn't say we shouldn't help. I said that like God, we should only help those who help themselves. I'm staying out the "debate" about Haiti. I just want to point out that whole thing about God helping those who help themselves is not in the bible or any religious canon. Ben Franklin said it. There is something in the bible about how you treat the least of us is how you treat God, but that is way too liberal and is why the bible must be changed.

Helping your fellow man in Haiti....

"What's going on? We can't even breathe! Who is helping us?" a man cried out today to an ABC News camera crew. Wearing a yellow bandana over his face and surrounded by other young and angry men, he said, "It takes one night to get the U.S. troops here, you know. It takes just a second for the military to get here."

What made the situation that much more tense was sightings of gangs of young men with machetes. On Wednesday they were seen getting into stores and taking all the supplies they could carry. The armed men were seen marching up and down the streets with machetes raised and the competition among the gangs turned quite fierce.

Shaul Schwarz, a photographer for TIME magazine, said he saw at least two downtown roadblocks formed with bodies of earthquake victims and rocks. "They are starting to block the roads with bodies, it's getting ugly out there, people are fed up with getting no help," he told Reuters.

On one street, dozens of men and teenagers storm into the collapsed building of a cellular-phone company, pushing and shoving over the spoils. As an expensive pickup truck drives fast through the crowd, some men shout and throw stones, cracking its window.

Video footage from the city showed bands of Haitian youths armed with machetes wandering the streets looting, as the local police were largely invisible.

Good thing, too, because there are many physically and mentally disabled people who truly can't.

The politics of this situation is messy and complicated, and I have my gripes as well. But I still contend that now is not the time to be hashing it out.

So what I'm seeing is: The Hatians are more than ready to pick up and move objects, if they have specific gain in doing so. But helping out the dude next door is out of the question.

The U.N. pulled all the doctors out of the field hospitals... because those they are helping are now attacking the help. (They're back in now, btw.)

They say that there are about 50,000 Americans in Haiti. We sent some of the best search & rescue teams in the world to Haiti to locate people trapped in the rubble.

Should they attempt to save Americans first, (assuming they know exactly where they are) or .... first come first served?

The real question is if this had happened in Charleston or Raleigh, would you and Lester be looting with machetes or rifles? And would you share your recipes for human flesh?

I know I have a tendency to get quite upset when people display such an obivous disregard for anything but their own immediate self interest. It calms me down a lot to know you are a tiny minority as I watch the world come together to aid disaster victims and the heroic efforts of the majority of Haitians to aid in their own rescue and recovery. Sometimes we all probably confuse this board with the real world, which it most certainly is not.
