Haiti: Let it sink into the sea. What a hell hole.

Haiti HAD emergency services, primitive and pathetic as they may have been compared to ours, but they were destroyed in the earthquake, as was the Presidential Palace. We have a Presidential Palace too, we call it the White House.
Imagine if Charleston were hit by a magnitude 7 quake. It would look much like Port Au Prince. What would any of us do? Power gone, hospitals flattened, roads clogged by debris, almost inaccessible to the outside world. Damn, sounds like WV on a good day.
A few seconds of video of people standing around is totally meaningless without context. Maybe they were in shock, maybe they were trying to figure out how best to extricate the wounded and dying from the rubble, maybe in the second after the camera stopped they all jumped in and started removing wreckage. If you keep up with news reports you seen hundreds of people crawling through the rubble, digging with their bare hands to get people out.
Aside to Pat Robertson. Haiti is 80% Catholic. It got its independence from France the same way we got our independence from Great Britain, a revolution. Their revolution was led by slaves. One result of it was the US got 13 states worth of territory (the Louisiana Purchase) for 3 cents an acre when the French left this part of the world.
I don't know if the US is shouldering the largest burden of relief, but we are the closest and most powerful. Over a dozen nations are sending aid so far, including the Chinese.
Were any of you guys complaining about the aid we sent after the 2004 tsunami. Remember all those pictures of victims just standing there, doing nothing, in the moments after the wave washed away everything they had? Or did I miss that thread?

There's one thing you'll learn as you grow older: You cant fix everything. The issues involving Haiti and much of Africa are little different than the issues concerning the Arabs and the Jews, in that it's always been this way, and probably always will... no matter HOW much money you throw at the problem.

My only thought on is that the US Government should not be handing cash over to the Haitians. We need to send people on American payrolls to provide search and rescue, recovery, and security labor. We also need to be sending goods and commodities. Rice, beans, fresh water, cleaning supplies, tools or what ever Haitians need to clean up their country.

In short, the US gets no economic benefit from handing out cash. We need to hand out products and labor to pump up our economy as well as fix the infrastructure in Haiti. This way, North America wins.

On a different subject, but still concerning this topic:

I just heard an ole West Virginia boy calling from Haiti to a local talk show. He and his family have lived there for THIRTY YEARS, doing work with their church. This guy is from Clendenin. Now, if you've ever been to Clendenin, you'll understand the amazing dedication this guy has for Haiti. His family was raised there. Personally, I wouldn't have ever gone near Haiti if they gave me an all expense paid vacation. So I have more than admiration for the guy... I have wonderment. How does an old country boy leave the back hills of WV and wind-up for thirty years in that hell hole? Amazing.

The other thing that I couldnt get over was his dialect: He sounded exactly like every other resident of Clendenin. How do you spend 30 years in a foreign country and still do that??

It isn't necessarily the U.S. Gov that should be expected to respond here. However, since there is no debating that American Corporations have benefitted tremendously from the brutal dictatorships that have ran this country, as well as other countries throughout Latin and Central America, and there is also no question that American military power has been utilized to maintain the corporate status quo in these areas, at VERY LEAST the corporations that have profited from these systems should be made to help out..
