Re: Haiti: Let it sink into the sea. What a hell hole.
Well said, ACE,
I looked through one of the links at the picture's and read about 300 of the 417 comments on the site. Pretty much the same thing on there, Prayer, Money, OMG, There is a GOD, There is no God, Give Money Don't Pray, Prayer is the only answer, yada, yada, yada.
One guy posted a comment that the Cruise ships that are used to 1,000's of people could be sent to the area for relief help. He was the only one that stuck out in my mind. Why not? .... Not to give the Haiti people a cruise of a life time, but to step up the the plate and DO SOMETHING.
Think of the good wil it would bestoe on them. People on board could vol. to aide in the effort, or be dropped off before hand to with some help to return home or what ever. Money donated could be used to help defray some of the money the cruise lines would lose in the interm. Pack up other ships, with only people to Vol. to help and send them. Far Fetched idea, maybe, crazy, maybe.. but at least and IDEA!
I do believe in Prayer, I do believe in Money to help and have sent a very small amount, (but that text thing was an idea too and I think your gong to be supprised at the amount of money that is going to be donated this way.)
The katrina event is a drop in the bucket as to what may or may not happen in the U.S. some day in the future. If it does happen here and I have to meet my maker, I just Hope Pat Robinson, meets his some day too. All though God works in many ways.... It may bring more people to help out with, what he said, (what, an ASS, in my opinion, and most of the comments about him on the CNN site), than what I have stated. I am sure I will have a lot to atone to someday, but the nice thing is... "He will too!"

Forget Pat Robertson and leave God out of this. I'd like to go back to my original point.
See that photo I posted? Right there is at least 25 young healthy males standing around. That country is devastated. It needs every single pair of hands it can get to dig through rubble and do the thousands of other jobs that need to be done. No one should just be standing around. I'll never forget the photos and film of people digging out the rubble of London during WWII. Every man, woman and child formed chains of people to help move material. I just feel that standing around is not an option here either.

CoolBreeze: You are callous and disgusting for suggesting that the first people to help Haiti dig out should be Hatians. To insinuate that after such a horrible earthquake they should do anything more than sit there and wait for help, or death, is WRONG!
Pat Robertson: A whole hoop of priests, and the archbishop of Haiti were killed as well... or do Catholics not count in your world view?
The one good thing I see in all this... the presidential "palace" (they have one of those... but no ER) is in ruin. Here's hoping that's God's little metaphor in all this.

Sorry.Michael Ian Black wrote:One bright spot on this terrible day is seeing everybody come together and agreeing that Leno sucks.
Now, back to trashing Haiti.
I see some very good points in this thread but I am wondering, what else is there to do be help? America and the rest of the free world has thousands of resources from search and rescue, to floating hospitals, and thousands of people willing and able to help. Why not help?
The bottom line is that whenever a disaster of this magnitude occurs anywhere in the world, we help. The fact that it occurred in Haiti should be of no consequence. If this disaster occurred in Great Britain, Italy, Germany or other "partner" nations, I doubt there would be such a cry of cynicism.

We all know that it's a GIVEN that the United States will send millions in aid to every country that needs it, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We ARE the Big Daddy of Relief, and always have been. We send support even if the nation we're supporting hates us.
The only thing I'm asking is that along with my support, the people GETTING the support at least APPEAR to care enough to help each other in the meantime.

Re: Haiti: Let it sink into the sea. What a hell hole.
Some information gathered over the past two years:
There is no serious policy or accountability in Haiti on how projects on a national level are working out. Haiti’s in such a bad situation, especially after the hurricanes, and the state is seemingly unconcerned or not eager to address the problems. You have a lot of international agencies and donors carrying out projects, but there is no sense of what is happening to the money. You have a lot of projects that are creating jobs for short periods of time with no long term impact.
So much of the money coming into Haiti is slated for varying degrees of emergencies and issues that are affecting the country: food security, lack of water, or hurricane relief. A lot of the people that are struggling in the cities are reliant on international aid, whether it’s for their job or to get electricity into their homes.
The remittances to Haiti from the U.S. and Canada are incredibly high. The development aid to Haiti is about 715 million dollars a year. Remittances to Haiti is double that every year.
The longer the U.S., Canada, France, and United Nations play a role in Haiti’s political future the less the Haitian politicians will do to find solutions that address the countries needs. There’s a sense that the entire world community is running the country and not Haitians themselves. (National Welfare?)
Haiti is a country that culturally doesn’t seem to belong in the Caribbean and Latin America. Haiti is very much alone in the region in terms of its traditions, its cultural beliefs, and its history. It has had such a conflicted history filled with coup d’états ...and violence really shaping the society. It was a major cotton and sugar cane producer, it went through a period of very successful tourism and then all of that collapsed.
Haiti’s population is not that large, but it is incredibly young, more than half is under 25. People in the countryside have large numbers of children they can’t feed. There are no government programs attempting to curb this growth or encouraging people to stay in the country to develop the agricultural industry. At this rate you get a sense that the poverty is only going to get deeper.
Numerous schools and hospitals have closed because teachers, social workers and health providers could not go to work for fear of violence.
It is estimated that about 5.6 per cent of people aged 15-49 years old in Haiti are living with HIV/AIDS. This includes about 19,000 children. Antiretroviral drugs are extremely scarce.
As many as 2,000 children a year are trafficked to the Dominican Republic, often with their parents’ support.
Approximately 1,000 children are working as messengers, spies and even soldiers for armed gangs in Port Au Prince.

How is any of that relevant to helping victims of a disaster of biblical proportions?
If this had happened in Great Britain, would you also think we shouldn't help? Israel? Brazil?
There are a hundred thousand dead and up to 3 million injured. How can anyone who can help, not?

Re: Haiti: Let it sink into the sea. What a hell hole.
The same way people dont help when they see a homeless person starving on the streets, or an elderly person trying to do thing's they're just too old to do like mow their lawn or shovel a snow covered driveway, by just simply walking on by without even turning a head... Everyone's always trying to run to these other countries and save them when we've had people (IN THIS STATE and country for that matter) starving nightly.
side note:
Situations like this one are totally different from the rant I started to take but cut off up above... EVERY nation who can should be contributing in situations like this one, but they barely lift fingers while our country does the heavy lifting and foots most of the bill for the ENTIRE relief effort....

Yeah right... All of this over a photograph?? I'm sure that I can find plenty of photographs from 9/11 that looks like people are standing around doing nothing...
Perhaps "My Pet Goat" hasn't been released in Haiti.

Footing the bill?? Much of the problems of the political situation in Haiti as well as Central and Latin America can be traced to the long history of U.S. Imperialism in those areas..
I see a whole lot of rightwingers complaining about helping here, what I do not see is a thorough understanding how U.S. foreign policy has acted like the bully for U.S. corporate interests and that much of the extreme poverty that is being faced in these regions has come as a result of the actions of the U.S.
The foreign policy as it relates to these places has been for U.S. corporations to exploit them economically... Appointing brutal dictators that murder their own people, but are given free reign due to their openess to American corporate interests.. Nothing new here...
Anyone that has it in their head that the U.S. has always wore the white hat and rode in to these countries on a white horse out of nothing more than kindness has a very ignorant view of the world..

Actually, the photograph is just CB's latest evidence... this started over the video coming out of Haiti... and still coming out of Haiti. A whole lot of people doing nothing... although now they're starting to bitch because the help isn't there quick enough.DJSHOCKLEY wrote:Yeah right... All of this over a photograph?? President Obama must hate black people, too.
A bad thing happened, folks. How about picking up the rock that's laying on your neighbor instead just standing there waiting for the U.N. to do it.

Riiight...
Huge intellectual leap....
And AGAIN, I can show u plenty of photos from 9/11, that those that want to claim people are doing nothing can use as evidence to back up their claims..
Still doesn't make it true..

Oh, wait... Haiti doesn't have emergency services... but they had a presidential palace.
