CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Director Morgan Spurlock went a long way to get to get to the bottom of what has made Fox's "The Simpsons" the iconic program it's become over the last 20 years.
The West Virginian native produced and directed the hourlong documentary "The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special -- In 3D! On Ice!" which follows the 450th episode of the series airing at 8 p.m. today (Sunday) on Fox.
The creators and producers of the show may not have wanted him to be in the show, but Spurlock said they were absolutely sure about who they wanted for the special. The list of potential directors only had one name: his.
"It was pretty humbling and overwhelming," said Spurlock, who was born in Parkersburg and raised in Beckley.
He got the call last February and started work on the show by the summer. Production took about six months.

I just watched the first 2 minutes of it off WVAH / Armstrong Cable. I don't know who's to blame, but there are massive framing issues.
Shots that were recorded and chironed at 16:9 are being shown at 4:3 with the edges cut off instead of letter boxed.

The thing I cant get over is Morgan Spurlock. The poor guy needs serious help from makeup. I thought that with his success, he'd be a little more presentable. But no, he still sports that 1979 Fu-Manchu mustache and that homeless shelter hair. And who dresses him... Goodwill? What a honor to host this special. But to still look like an unemployed bum down in Beckley is a little much. I think all those McDonalds hamburgers had a permanent effect on his health.

Off topic I know, but I see a lot of shows that way now on my old non HD tv. I assume it's just the way of the world as everything is shot and planned for widescreens tvs now.
