Shuffle up and deal

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Shuffle up and deal

Post by Ace Purple »

The anti-gambling people are having trouble maintaining the status quo in these economic times.

HARRISBURG - It's a done deal at last. Table games are coming to Pennsylvania by the end of the year.

By a vote of 103-89, legislation to legalize poker, blackjack, roulette, and other table games received long-awaited final approval last night in the state House. Gov. Rendell plans to sign the bill today.

I like the fact that EVERY state seems to think that casinos will solve the problem, but they forget if every state has them then the tourists will quit coming and just stay home....

And local gamblers don't stay overnight or spend money on restaurants, shows, etc. They just go home once they are broke.

Case in point: Atlantic City

AC is such a sad place now. I was there in April and I could not believe that state of disrepair that the shops had fallen along the boardwalk. The inside of the Casinos were nice, and the hotel rooms had been recently freshened, but the overall state of the exteriors were less than well maintained. The mall at Caesar's pier is still nice and the outlets area was clean, but the rest of the town is not in good shape. When I was working regularly in AC in 2005, things were much nicer and the residents of the town looked much less impoverished.

And with the addition of table games (at Parx and Harrahs) in Philly, what little traffic from Philly and southeastern PA that was going to AC will cease. Plus, folks from NYC and north Jersey are filling casinos in the Poconos. This will just move more traffic to the Poconos. The only answer left for AC is to open a mega resort/casino/conference center to draw traffic. But who would want to go to a trade show in AC in January. Then again, Las Vegas is pretty darn cold in January and my face was more chapped from the dry air in the desert than it has ever been from the salt air in winter. And it was not until I returned home did I get an email alerting me to the fact that the Palazzo offered the use of humidifiers in the room for free if you called the concierge to have it set up.
