If I don't pay attention to the weather forecast, I know that snow is in the forecast if I stop by Kroger after work and see the shelves mostly cleared of bread, and most of the milk gone.

It's a Tri-State tradition.

I bought some toilet paper, 20 microwave dinners, some bread, a couple cans of corned beef, and a case of beer.

Except I can't bunker down, had to drive to Charleston today IN this crap... Didn't get home until 8, I avoided the "trainwreck" that is I-64, I took US 60 both down and back (believe me, in bad weather, it's far safer if not actually faster).

I just bought a 5k generator during the last storm, which should handle a couple space heaters, a refrigerator, several florescent lights - and if you unplug one of the space heaters, there's plenty of capacity to run a microwave. If it's summer, substitute a window a/c for the space heater.

Those of us in small town radio (I'm sure Nunley remembers from his days here) love the "are they skoo?" calls? About 10 years ago the county school systems installed the "school hotline number". Now parents can call the number, THEN call us to ask if that was right. Now, they have the automated phone systems that automatically call parents to tell them the status of their little snot-nosed brats and their schoolin. The parents get the call, THEN call us to see if that was right, too.

You have to love the great unwashed.

That's nothing. When I was in school, my parents would REFUSE to believe school was closed unless it was on WSAZ. WSAZ's word was law. I would listen to the radio and even roll tape and play it back for my folks. Unless it was reported on WSAZ, we had to be ready to catch the bus "just in case."
