Ten years ago, most homes relied on dial-up connections to access the Internet and iPods, flat-screen TVs and the Nintendo Wii didn't exist.

In 2010, consumer should expect to see more revolutionary products supplanting old mainstays. In media, DVDs, books, newspapers and magazines will continue to lose ground to services like in-home movie rentals and gadgets like the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle. In big-ticket items, the push for energy efficiency will continue to influence consumer decisions on cars and home upgrades.

As a result, some consumer products appear poised for a dip in sales, which could be a prelude to obsolescence. Here are 10 items not to buy in 2010.

External Hard Drives?!?!?!?

OK, I can see that because I have not purchased an external hard drive in 2 years but I have purchased SATA drives that I can swap out of open bays, but I do not think Mozy and Carbonite are the solution.

Compact Digital Cameras.... Nah. These will exist because an iPhone and other camera phones are relatively crappy while digital SLRs are too big to keep around. And I still say DSLRs are too big and I have and love my DSLR.

You'll see online backups first for business, most likely medical services, which will soon be required to be available online. A friend of mine owns an online backup business. As a matter of fact, it's server is located in WV. He's marketing to small businesses that don't want to bother with having to keep buying external hard drives as records pile up.

I have been consuming about a terabyte per year for the last three years. I am pretty sure that I cannot afford Carbonite at a consumption rate like that esp. when you consider that I have purchase my last drive at about $70.00/TB.

Hold that.... My last TB was actually expensive because I just stuffed a couple of 500GB 7200 RPM 2.5" HDs into my netbooks so that was about $240 for that TB, but with normal drives, they will fall below the $65.00/TB in the next 8 weeks.

I have a 300 GB drive in my geek box and I have yet to fill it beyond 100 GB. I guess if you are downloading HD movies or something, I can see needing a boat load of hard drive space but otherwise, I don't see the need.

I would love to be able to back up my pictures online. I am paranoid about loosing my pictures. So paranoid, in fact, that I would have to have redundancy in my online back up solution as well. That would cost a small fortune.

I am now shooting two events per month and need a place to store RAW images as well as processed photos that are given to the client. At 32GB of preprocessed images and the backups and processed images, I can easily have 80GB of images saved between 2 hard drives (40GB/drive) It does not take long to fill a drives at that rate. And compression tools mixing with photos have done some strange things to my images in the past. Then again, Vista also screwed up a bunch of photos in 2008 as well after SP1 Beta was installed on a PC.

But the eater of hard drive space on my systems is Windows Media Center being used as a DVR. I am constantly culling, cleaning and defragging that drive to be able to store the shows that I record to watch later. Oh! And the downloads of original BBC programming has also eaten some space as well (because the BBC-A version of their shows are unwatchable.)

I don't think they're giving Android devices enough credit...

In addition to the Droid, which has sold pretty well so far, the Nexus One -- aka the Google Phone -- was officially announced this week. Available now on T-Mobile, then Verizon in a couple of months.



The Big 4, esp Verizon, has jumped on board carrying Android devices. This is only the beginning of a slew of them rolling out through the year.

I don't see how it will not become a solid alternative to Blackberry and the iPhone in the future, through sheer numbers and availability alone.

App store is now over 10,000 and quickly growing.

Otherwise, I pretty much agree with everything else.

Unless WinMo comes out with capacitive touch screens by this summer, Microsoft can kiss the smart phone market goodbye.

I am waiting for an Android 2.1 device that I can purchase from a third party that works with my existing account settings on at&t.
