What a downer year in music. Compared to the hip-hop and rap of the past, this was like a year of easy listening (sans Lady Gaga's stuff.)

Earlier this decade, I would have never dreamed that Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake would still be significant in music.

I must be getting a touch of that old timers ahead of schedule, but I could have swore that I was embedding videos all the time up till a couple weeks ago. Then I started having problems.

If you listen to pop music long enough, you can look back through the sands of time and notice that its "sound" shifts about every 3-4 years.

Last decade, hip-hop and pop-ternative dominated the charts, up until about three years ago, when pop began sounding like pop again. This synth, autotune sound that's hot now echos the pop music of the mid to late 80's. Sure, it still sounds different, but 5 years ago when hip-hop was dominating the charts, who would have thought that synthesized music would come back in style?

Better yet, who would have dreamed that hip-hop artists would incorporate this sound in order to stay relevant? Or that urban radio would start spinning JT and Lady Gaga?

I agree though that pop doesn't sound as edgy as it did even 3 years ago.

With that said, this sound is beginning to get long in the tooth. There will be another "sound shift" coming soon. New decade and all...
