This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Mind Garage-West Virginia legend a with rock n roll legacy

Post by nitchg »

"The Mind Garage were the greatest band to ever come out of West Virginia",
and still are. I found this http://www.christianrockhalloffame.com
Still going after 40 years, their latest offering is a new Christmas song, a video,
and also something interesting, an 800 year old illuminated manuscript
Bible frontispiece restored by the lead singer.
I love the song.

I couldnt help but notice that there's only one band listed in the "Christian Rock Hall Of Fame". Must be really REALLY hard to get in?

We've been though this before.

They were great.

They have NOTHING to do with Christian rock, let alone any "Hall Of Fame".

The Electic Prunes did what they did a year to a year and a half before they did it, so who was the originator of a "rock and roll liturgy"?

And if you remember my postings in the other thread, I brought up the fact that liturgys are not Christian.

I lost a little respect for them when Jack Bonasso walked into the station one day pushing his "new song about Mary Lou Retton".

I almost lost all respect for them when I found out that they still thought they had something in this day and age.

It must be a West Virginia thing. When the Mountaineers are unranked in a sport, the fans feel they should be ranked. When they are ranked 22nd, the fans feel they should be number 15. When they are in the Top 10, the fans feel they should be number 1.

Same for The Mind Garage. Cut a few albums for RCA that instantly went to the cut out bins and the fans actually think that they hit the Billboard Hot 100.

Listen to your 45's of "Asphalt Mother" and "What's Behind Those Eyes?" and remember how great The Mind Garage was. Just don't listen to anybody TELL you how great they were or, worse yet, are...

Yes, we HAVE been through this before. Matter of fact the following are YOUR words.
"The Mind Garage were the greatest band to ever come out of West Virginia", by Scott Reppert in 'Since you brought up the Mind Garage' Fri Aug 08, 2008 2:02 pm. Just because you spew so much hate what makes you think what you say is the last word, or anybody cares, especially when you are wrong! What I want to know is when did Scott Reppert become such a hater. Does it come naturally or do you use this board to practice? Either you are ignorant or you are a liar. I vote for ignorant

The Electric Prunes released their album AFTER the Mind Garage had already written the Electric Liturgy. See Scott, the Electric Liturgy and the RCA album with the Electric Liturgy songs are NOT he same thing. Wake up! It's in the video if you bothered to watch it. Don't believe it? If you would do your own research you would find that to be true. None other than the former editor of CCM magazine, Bruce Brown said "At that time, there were virtually no albums available to a national audience that could remotely be described as Christian rock; it's impossible to overstate how radical the "Electric Liturgy" was in that context." That includes the Electric Prunes, WHICH CAME OUT AFTER THE ELECTRIC LITURGY WAS WRITTEN IN 1967. Oh but I suppose you know more about Christain rock music than Bruce Brown does.

And I don't recall the Mind Garage saying they originated rock and roll liturgy. You are the one saying that, and then blaming them for it. What the Mind Garage does say is they are the earliest documented rock group to play a live, (understand that word, LIVE?), rock and roll worship service in church ( in CHURCH...get it? ). The Electric Prunes couldn't even perform their Liturgy once in church or anywhere because they didn't write it, their manager did. .And when they tried to play it live, they screwed it up so bad they never tried again and won't to this day. How do i know? Because I know James and Mark, the original members of the Prunes who are on that album you mention ( Mass in F minor), and I asked them. And by the way, the Electric Prunes never were, never will be, and never wanted to be, a Christian rock group. The Mind Garage was, did, and is. Everything the Mind Garage says can be authenticated easily by researching the actual articles they mention. Really easy because lots of it is from the WVU student newspaper. If you can find any earlier provably authentic mention of a live performance of a rock Christian worship service in church, in local or national papers, on tv, radio, or in a magazine, a poster, a church bulletin, ANYTHING, bring it on, and I'll kiss your ugly hateful phoney baloney butt. But I'm not worried because any earlier documentation doesn't exist. And don't think you can fall back on Jesus music because I know some surviving members of the earliest Jesus music groups and they will readily admit that Mind Garage was well in advance of them.

You ignorance is really showing regarding religion and the liturgy. You say it's not Christian.
There are MORE Catholics than all the other kinds of Christians combined. Look it up. Don't tell me Catholics aren't Christian because you accept the authority of the Catholic Church every time they pick up the Bible. Think about it. Who put the Bible together? Have you figured it out yet?

Catholics have used liturgies for centuries, almost two millennia. So how can you say with any credibility, that ANY liturgy is not Christian and expect people to believe you. Any light bulbs go off in that dull head of your yet? Still want to argue that liturgies aren't Christian. How about the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Episcopal liturgies, or the historic liturgies from the Catholic Church and the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, and ancient liturgies from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Cappadocia, which all have the same basic structure that the Electric Liturgy also follows. Would your pathetic retort be , 'oh those ancient Christians, they didn't know what thery were talking about, and those nearly 2 billion present day Catholics, Presbeterian, Methodists, and Episcopalian, you can forget about them because they're wrong.' My money would be on them being right and your little pin head religious cult thinking being wrong.

So what has Jack Bonasso pushing his "new song about Mary Lou Retton". have to do with the Mind Garage? Not a thing. Maybe it's your manopause kicking in, Scott. MARY LOU RETTON !!! Three exclamation points. HERE'S A FEW MORE !!! MARY LOU RETTON? What is that..like 25 years ago? That's like saying you lost respect for the Monkees because you didn't like something Peter Tork did 15 years after the Monkees broke up You remind me of my ex wife, she never let anything go. Make one tiny mistake and it was brought up forever more. Didn't matter if it was 5 years or 20 years, she would use it against me. She would be like, I know you looked at the girl on the beach!!! You don't love me...But honey that was 20 years ago, and I didn't look at her like you think. Hey guys, know what I mean?.

I feel sorry for you Scott. I mentioned a page which has a Christmas song, a video which does nothing but repeatedly sing praises to God, and a Christmas card, and instead of rejoicing in the season, and all you can say is 'they still thought they had something in this day and age". Essentially you call Mind Garage fans stupid. You apparently were one once. Hmmmm, mabe you have a point there.

It's Christmas man! Is that not something for this day and age? if you don't like the song or video, that's OK, but to say what the Mind Garage has to offer is not relevant in this day and age is just plain stupid. What they "had" in the 1960s and and what they and that web page "have" today, is the good news of the gospel. Same thing then and now. So what has changed? But ladies and gentlemen, Scott Almighty has spoken, God and Christmas was alright in the 60s, but it is irrelevant in this day and age. Turn in your Bibles.

Wow! In your same hateful post, you, a member of WV broadcasting are berating West Virginians saying they should accept being less than the best. Hey WV teams, might as well give up and go home. Scott says you did your best but you're just not that good. So accept it.

You told us why you think the Mind Garage is undeserving of practically anything, but what I really want to know is what you meant when you said "The Mind Garage were the greatest band to ever come out of West Virginia".How? Come on tell us.

Did you mean they were the first and only rock group made ENTIRELY of West Virginians ever to be signed to a major recording company, the largest one in the world at the time. Did you mean they were among the earliest pioneers of Christian rock? Did you mean they were the group that they were the first band to give a rock worship service in a documentary on national TV ? Did you mean that after that they were the first rock group on national tv news playing live rock music in a church? Maybe you meant they were they the first group to record Christian rock music in Nashville? We're talking about West Virginians here. West Virginians. Not New Yorkers. This is all in the video you apparently didn't watch, or love to hate.

Like I said, that they were the first in some many things is all easily verified, and they tell you where to look in case you think it is BS. If this is not enough, do you want to give us more reasons why they were the greatest band to ever come out of WV. I think its funny that you are calling them the greatest band but I am only making a case for them as a rock band. That's a big step up, but then, you ARE the only music expert on this board aren't you. Greatest band ! wow! Whatever it was they they did in the past to make you say what you did, it didn't go away. Th past is fixed. Can't be changed. So how are they not still are the greatest rock band to come out of WV? Oh that's right, Jack Bonasso wrote a song about Mary Lou Retton, that pissed off your arogant self, and you don't like anyone saying they should be in any hall of fame.

Let me get this straight. You say "Listen to Asphalt Mother and What's Behind Those Eyes and remember how great the Mind Garage was . Were you a groupie, a teeny bopper !!! hahahaha! I'm laughing at your taste in music. Now if you can concentrate for longer than it takes to spew your venom, you just said, "remember how great the Mind Garage was". And in another post you said, "The Mind Garage were the greatest band to ever come out of West Virginia", I agree. But in your last sentence in this post you say, "Just don't listen to anybody TELL you how great they were..." You just did Scott. You are very confused. Those meds working out OK for you? , YOU just told us how great they were. YOU did. So the message you are sending is , don't anybody listen to blather from me, Scott the self appointed opinionated monkee boy.

Scott...Have a banana. Merry Christmas :)

Arp must be in the Witness Protection Program.

Sir, which member of "Mind Garage" are you? Are you related to any of its members?

This could be a question on 'Jeopardy!' and NO ONE would get it...nor would one person in ten thousand actually care, and by that, I mean West Virginians.

As to Scott's musical knowledge, he's proven he has game many times on this board. I don't know Mr. Reppert personally, and I don't have a dog in this hunt, but when you want to make a point, just use the facts at hand. You've made hurling insults a new event in the Winter Olympics.

Just my two cents' worth, respectfully submitted. And, in the spirit of this blessed day, MERRY CHRISTMAS-no sarcasm intended.

Wow, and I thought the good ol days of me slappin Arp and Jet Black around on the political threads got heated...

Anywho, I first became aware of Mind Garage when I was doing research on the late 1960's rock scene in Charleston. I stumbled upon the name "Mind Garage" when I saw them listed as an opening act for Iron Butterfly at the Charleston Civic Center in April of 1970. Since the name was so unusual I did some online research and it wasn't til then that I realized that Mind Garage was a bunch of guys from WVU. Just a few years ago when Mind Garage frontman Larry McClurg was attempting to organize Goodstock 2007 I corresponded with him occasionally via e-mail.

The Goodstock thing was a good idea and the bands that were initially listed as being on the bill; Quicksilver Messenger Service and Sky Saxon and the Seeds would have been cool to see. After corresponding back and forth with Larry I could tell however that despite the inclusion of former Woodstock organizer Artie Kornfeld, there wasn't enough cooks in the kitchen to make this the great meal that they were trying to create.

One major mistake was having it on a farm in Summersville as opposed to a location with a bigger year round population. Another major mistake was thinking that you could finance something like this solely on advance ticket sales and zero promotional budget. A third major mistake was not following up more aggressively when local radio stations were willing to find ways to give them free airtime to promote the event. A fourth major mistake was not having a team of local organizers that knew what they were doing. By the time that the date for Goodstock had arrived, many of the bigger name acts had already pulled out.

As far as the legacy of Mind Garage goes...

They released their first self produced 45 in 1968, they got signed to a major label in 1969 and by 1970 they were already gone..

They were together for less than three years, yet 39 years later here we are talking about them...

I think that says enough..

As for Catholics being Christian: Ephesians 4:11 and 12 shows us the PROPER pattern of Church leadership in the eyes of God (Who, through men inspired of the Holy Spirit, WROTE the Bible): "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ". I see nothing in Catholicism that lines up with that!!! Where the's Pope? Where's a Priest? Certainly in the actual plan of things that God intended.

And speaking of them there little boxes Catholics go into after things go wrong, what's with that? My Bible tells me in 2 Timothy 2:5 that "there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;". You don't need a Priest and a confessional to get right with God. You just need to hit your two knees with a repentant heart and have a talk to the Mediator...that's what He's there for. Not just during Mass (where is that in Scripture, by the way?)...every day of the week.

Speaking of which, nitchg, are a Christian? What was the date that you asked Jesus Christ into your life to become your personal Lord and Savior? Can't tell me the date? Want to make sure that you're a Christian? PM me and we'll get 'er done. It's a personal relationship with Jesus, not with a Priest or Pastor, that God is looking for. And I pray that you have one, nitchg, or I go and quote what God says the end result of the decisions you have made will be.

On to the Mind Garage. I stated how great they WERE. I can't see Doug Hastings doing a tour of radio stations promoting a song he wrote about Nancy Kerrigan. Why? Because he has a legendary past...not one where you have to have to create a "hall of fame" for yourself because nobody else will admit you to theirs. I pray you didn't design the website.

Now there. I've shown you that there that Catholicism is NOT Christian and The Mind Garage are the greatest rock band to ever come out of West Virginia and that their legacy diminishes every second they try to create a new one.

I do not spew venom, nitchg, I speak truthfully and on topic. I will no longer argue with anyone that attacks me and not the subject...

Oh, and by the way, nitchg, see my name on there? That is my name. I have a lawyer friend that has told me that in cases involving message boards, chat rooms, and other internet activities, that a person using their real name versus a "User Name" equates into the old saying of "possession is nine tenths of the law".

C'mon, Jackson. Put your name over there and make yourself credible...

Dear Scott,

The Pope is head of the Catholic Church in an unbroken line of succession from St. Peter, who as we all know, was an Apostle. Christ, when changing Simon's name said, "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church".

As Jesus said to the Apostles, "whoever so sins you forgive, they are forgiven them". This is the source of the Sacrament of Confession, which is now called Reconciliation. Christ gave the power to forgive sins to the Apostles and their successors, priests.

The priest is a representative of Christ, not Christ himself.

The Mass is the re-enactment of the Last Supper, wherein Christ broke the bread saying, "take this and eat, this is my body". You'll find that in Scripture.

Catholics were the first Christians, all other Christian denominations are offshoots of the Catholics. I'm thinking Martin Luther was the first.

There are NO denominations...of any kind...in the Bible. Flat out. Hands down.

Show me the basis for Catholicism in the Bible. Not from history, just from The Bible. I'll save you the time...you can't.

If Catholicism was Christian, EVERY Catholic service would read from the Bible, offer invitations for those in attendance to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and sing songs...in English...that would be praising God. Look at the lifestyles of most Catholics: living in the hope that an hour a week performing a religious act will eradicate a week of sinful living.

Still think Catholics are Christians? Let's see what all The Bible DOES have to say about the subject:

None of the images loaded, but I'll tell you this.
Every Catholic service includes readings from the Bible. The opportunity to join the Catholic Church is available 24/7/365
Catholic services ARE in English, in countries where English is the spoken language. They are in the vernacular of whatever country they are performed. On some special occasions, and among a small segment of dissident Catholics, Masses are said in Latin.
As a small aside, The Mass returned to English in 1965 and I, believe it or not, was one of the servers (Altar Boys) at the first English Mass in my hometown of Danville, VA. Speaking of English, nobody in the Bible ever did ANYTHING in English. Christ spoke Aramaic as his language of birth, a language now as dead as Latin, the language of the Romans. Christians in early times did their worship and their song in whatever vernacular language was the tongue of their nation. Latin was preserved in the Church in a tradition going back to Rome, where Peter took the Church and established the city of Rome as the headquarters of the tiny cult that grew into the world's largest religion.

The name Catholic simply means Universal. The Church did not call itself Catholic until after the schism with Martin Luther and the other Protestant sects that arose, actually centuries after. It was simply "Christian" until then. Denominations began with those who split from the original Christian church, the Catholics. Catholicism didn't invent denominations, the people who invented the denominations did.
