O Brother Where Art Thou Dialog?

I was watching one of my favorite movies on CMT (Country Music Television) , O Brother Where Art Thou.

At the scene where they all come out of the radio station after recording their song, the governor gets out of his car. The one guy tells him that "they pay good money to sing in a can", whereas the governor replies "we're not here to make a record you dumb Cracker!" Except that line on CMT was changed to "we're not here to make a record you dumb sombitch!".

Now... why do you suppose that line was changed in such a way? Is "Cracker" out nowadays? Is that the new N word for Whites? And I would think that CMT would rather have left Cracker in, than a much harsher curse word.

A couple of examples:

1. Seinfeld - Enema description changed "the wet one" to "wet and wild."
2. Sopranos - Removal of line, "A champagne car for my champagne blonde."

Why change these lines when episode repeat after the first airing on TV. After the season and original repeats were over, the syndicated reruns had new lines.

One of the reasons is the syndicated versions are often show much earlier in the day, when "children" may be watching, so they are more heavily edited. Sopranos mostly because of it being originally on HBO. Goofy, yes, but some cracker might complain about it. Oh, I meant some sumbitch.

No, some sumbitch edited that line out of Sopranos after Season 6 part I completed its original run on air and on demand but before the re-airing of those episodes on HBO before the final episodes of Season 6 part II aired. WHY!?!???

I liked that line. It reminded me of Granddad purchasing a red car for his red head in 1987. Bastages.
