Actually, AOL, the web portal, is still very widely used and can easily sustain the company, though not in its present form. AOL is actually a pretty decent portal and I am a regular user of "AOL Radio."

I can remember way back when.... when you logged on to AOL, they did everything in their power to keep you off the Internet. They only wanted you to stay within their mainframe computer for all your needs. Somewhere very small on the page was a link to the Net, but you had to go looking for it because they kept moving it around.

Then, when broadband became widely used and people realized that they no longer needed their services to access the joyful interwebs, it was the beginning of the end.
And 10 years later, they still haven't found a new business model.
If they can take what they have that is still popular -- like their email, IM, music and news services and somehow take them to the next level, they might have a chance. But the "new web" continues to erode them ever so slowly...
