Swiss Ban Muslim Prayer Towers

This story is making big news right now:

The news of a Swiss referendum banning minarets in Switzerland has shocked the world. This last Sunday, November 29, the Swiss electorate approved an amendment to the Swiss Constitution that banned construction of minarets, or prayer towers. The amendment was approved by 57.5% of voters. The logic of those who claimed no animus to Islam as a religion is that the minarets are a sort of political muscle flexing in a religion that does not separate between politics and personal life.


I'm not leaving links because there are just too many of them. But I've given this issue thought years ago and asked myself the following: Given the choice, would I prefer to hear church bells ringing once or twice on Sundays.... or hear some guy chanting at the top of his voice from a high tower. No offense, but this chanting is not unlike the refrain in the song "Ahab the Arab" (the closest I can describe). As well as providing a visual cue to a Muslim community, the main function of the minaret is to provide a vantage point from which the call to prayer is made. The call to prayer is issued five times each day: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night. In most modern mosques, the prayer is called from the prayer hall, via microphone to a speaker system on the tower or highest point.

OK, now just imagine listening to THAT 5 times a day here in WV. Imagine local neighbors moving out on droves. What would you do?

If they had their equivalent to church bells, which are much less intrusive, I would have no problem with it in my community.

But they have to know that Americans, and Westerners in general, would find this very excessive and aggravating. But the infidels have no meaningful opinion.

Here in WV, they would chase them out of town before they themselves moved away.
