ALICE SPRINGS, Australia — Australian authorities plan to corral about 6,000 wild camels with helicopters and gun them down after they overran a small Outback town in search of water, trampling fences, smashing tanks and contaminating supplies.

The Northern Territory government announced its plan Wednesday for Docker River, a town of 350 residents where thirsty camels have been arriving daily for weeks because of drought conditions in the region.

"The community of Docker River is under siege by 6,000 marauding, wild camels," local government minister Rob Knight said in Alice Springs, 310 miles northeast of Docker. "This is a very critical situation out there, it's very unusual and it needs urgent action."

The camels, which are not native to Australia but were introduced in the 1840s, have smashed water tanks, approached houses to try to take water from air conditioning units, and knocked down fencing at the small airport runway, Knight said.

The carcasses of camels killed in stampedes at water storage areas are contaminating the water supply, he added.

The government plans to use helicopters to herd the camels about nine miles outside of town next week, where they will be shot and their carcasses left to decay in the desert. The state government will give a $45,000 grant for the cull and to repair damaged infrastructure in the town.

PETA is too busy defending the 58 deer/square mile that live in the suburban parts of Montgomery County PA not including the 250 deer/sq. mile that live on the protected lands of Valley Forge National Park. It is down right dangerous to drive along PA 23 through the park as a deer is liable to bolt in front of the car at any moment. Actually, it is more dangerous to drive through most parts of south eastern PA as the deer are slowly migrating into the northern, western, and northeastern parts of Philadelphia. I have seen one deer running along the abandon rail yards in Port Richmond which is less than 5 miles from city hall.

I feel for the people getting over run by camels because it feels like we are getting over run by deer in this part of PA.

6000 camels. Let's think about this shall we? That's quite a bit of meat, and it's going to be simply left to decay? Now, I'm not really a fan of camel meat, but I'm sure that there are some whose tastes differ from my own.

By the way, are camels indigenous to that area?

Camels were imported to Australia in the 1800's. Like in the American west, they
were thought to have some use in the arid land and to have an advantage over horses.
Didn't work out.
Trains were invented, then cars and airplanes. Rather than shoot the camels, they were just released.
Now they have to be shot. There are feral camels running around in the American southwest.
I suggest helicopter gunships using the 7.62 Gatling guns or if they are rounded up, the
"Big blue 82", BLU-82 "Daisy Cutter bomb. Blu-82 would hasten decomp by making lots of little
pieces to decompose rather than big ones. Gatlings would be more fun.
