WHEN OLD IS NEW

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

WHEN OLD IS NEW

Post by nitchg »

As a newbie, I have spent many hours reading posts from the present back to the beginning in 2007.
Esp. considering Lester's warm welcome to "clatter on, newb" :-) Instead of bringing a lot of old posts back to the top,I have posted a new topic and bring myself closer to up to date with all of you.

Concerning a tax on sugar. There is an interesting substitute for sugar called Miracle Fruit. It is unbelieveable. You can crack the skin of one of these berries and touch it to your tongue and everything tastes sweet, Super sweet, even lemons and onions. Everything you eat all day is so sweet tasting that you may lose your appetite from one drop of juice from the Miracle Fruit berry. The effect lasts 8-12 hours , not 15 minutes like the wikipedia article says.

Don't dare eat the whole berry.

Re: 2009 Charleston Regatta CANCELED! by CoolBreeze » Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:09 am
There is an interesting concept called an indoor festival. It won't replace the Regatta but it could be useful for entertainment and generating revenue. It can be statewide or specific to one city. I'll explain it in terms of musical entertainment in one city, but it could be modified for many kinds of events.
It works like this:
WEST VIRGINIA INDOOR FESTIVAL.
This idea has been tried in other states and has been so successful it has become an annual event.
1.The indoor festival can last for a week, or a few weekdays, or a weekend
2. Half a dozen (or more) businesses agree to bring in several different bands each night. The 15 bands (choose any number )could, if wanted, rotate from club to club each night or stay put.
3. Tickets are sold both at the door of each participating business ( club, etc) and at a central location like the Clay Center in Charleston or online.
4, One reasonably priced ticket ($5-10), is good for one day/night and allows entry into any or all of the participating clubs which the ticket holder can visit in one night. The next day/night a new ticket is required. Tickets for the entire week could also be sold at a discount. Money from ticket sales can pay for bands, and a % can go to the clubs if necessary. But cash incentives should not be necessary as the clubs benefit in other ways. Money can obviously be used for whatever purpose is designated by the organizers. I don't want to digress, but a certain corporation will do the ticket printing for free and organizers receive $1 for each ticket used.
5. Music industry experts and/or successful artists can be in panels which replace or co-locate with bands in certain clubs. Panels would do a variety of things: offer advice to musicians and wanna be's, tips on how to write songs, awards perks, money, or a recording session paid for by local sponsors, etc, a trip to a large concert in another city...use your imagination.
The benefits:
Whereas a concert or outdoor festival might be costly because of liability insurance, security, parking, sanitation, medical attendants, food, permits, advertising, stage, sound and lighting and venue, an indoor festival is not necessarily concerned with all of this because the clubs already are a venue with some sound-light equipment, stage, advertising budget, liability insurance, permits, licenses, sanitation, some even food, so no increased costs. Pooling advertising budgets with organizer's ticket revenue makes for bigger better ads which benefit local media with increased ad revenue. Clubs gain a larger customer base and bands get publicity and increased name recognition plus other compensation.
The city infrastructure and services are already in place and working as usual for parking, food, medical, security, ( police). Community businesses increase revenue above normal from the sale sale of food and bevereges, gasoline. The city government benefits from increased sales tax revenue and increased reputation as a good tourist location and place for fun.

"Is this a word?: stit"
Foxworthy might say, use stit in a sentence: That's jus stit, it is a word,
But it's a Latin root word usually always used with prefixes and suffixes so often, we recognize the words as English.
Sto = I stand. (Conjugated: sto, stare, steti, statum ). Examples: con-stit-ute, sub-stit-ute, pro-stit-ute, de-stit-ute, except in slang, stit=ho. There are other variations, status, stadium, stand, (maybe stick as in stick by=stand by)

I've always found it interesting that I know which people will take exception to those comments before I make them...

Nothing prophetic there... just sayin'.

The musicians union in Charleston already does most of this every year. It's a flop every time. You have to get name bands for it to work and someone has to pay for those name bands. Good idea otherwise.

I'd come back and save Regatta again but the corpse is way too cold and rotted by now.

if it was meant to give exception I didn't take it that way. It flew right over my head. I thought it was a public welcome invitation to the board and I'd like to thank you sincerely and for the green light to post.

Oh, thanks for reminding me about this!

I found out recently what the person that was using this was referring to. It does have an "internet specific" meaning...
