An 80-year-old man from Athens County, Ohio is in a Columbus hospital after fire destroyed his home early Thursday morning.
The State Fire Marshal says the fire happened at house on State Route 682 in The Plains shortly after 5:30 a.m.
Investigators say the man not only tried to fight the fire himself, but tried to retrieve personal possessions before he got out of the house. He suffered serious burn injuries and smoke inhalation.
A 78-year-old woman was able to get out when smoked detectors activated.
Invetigators ahve not released either person's name.
The Fire Marshal believes the fire started in the living room, but no word on how it started.
