Retire on $150 a month?
I was thumbing through some old LIFE magazines when I came upon this ad from 1945. Can you imagine?

My grandfather retired in 1970 with a pension check of $225 per month from Union Carbide.
In 1997, his pension was still $225. Good thing that social security was there to make up for inflation, since UC didn't.
That was about the time his asbestos exposure settlement checks started rolling in. By then, though, he was too old and sick to enjoy it.
I wonder how often private pension plans back then made up for the yearly inflation rate, like social security benefits do now.
Pretty cool ad, though.
