Air Raid On The Moon, This Is No Drill!

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Air Raid On The Moon, This Is No Drill!

Post by genlock »

NASA's mission to bomb the Moon
NASA will tomorrow launch a spectacular mission to bomb the Moon. Their LCROSS mission will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a missile that will blast a hole in the lunar surface at twice the speed of a bullet. The missile, a Centaur rocket, will be steered by a shepherding spacecraft that will guide it towards its target - a crater close to the Moon's south pole. Scientists expect the blast to be so powerful that a huge plume of debris will be ejected.

What harm could it do to hit the Moon with a onw megaton thermonuclear device.
It would be the most viewed live event in history.
It could have some scientific value too.
Would be cool to see.

It's a "______ Raid".

No air.

"Vacuum Raid" perhaps?

There's nothing for the big siren to oscillate on the moon!

Kinda' sad.

I wonder what the Green Socialists will think about this? Can environmentalists complain about a planet with no environment? If they find water under the surface, will the state of West Virginia declare the water is the property of the state?

In response to this latest news, the government of the Moon has decided to embargo the export of Quisp to the United States.

Surely we will get video of this thing.
Be a real shame if we did not.
Won't even be a "boom" without air.

Actually, the LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite) launched June 18. The Centaur upper stage will impact on Friday.
carrying a missile
A missile is a weapon of war that carries an explosive payload. The Centaur is (and always has been) an upper stage rocket for launching satellites. When the Centaur hits the moon, it'll be just metal. For this application, "bullet" is more accurate than "missile".

Probably the most interesting part about this mission is how it got started.

The primary payload for the launch was the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The LRO was originally planned to launch on a smaller Delta II rocket. During its design NASA switched to the larger Atlas V to provide more margin for spacecraft growth. But even the smallest version of the Atlas V could still loft significantly more payload than the LRO could use up even in a worst case scenario. So they opened an internal competition for a companion payload to fly alongside the LRO. LCROSS was chosen from 19 different entries.

Actually, the moon does have an environment. It's a vacuum. Every place has an environment. Environment simply means the conditions of whatever the place is.
We will get video live tomorrow about 7:30 am. I can't wait.

As Arp is to grammar, I am to definitions. Well, and grammar also. We make our living with the language, we should have command of it. It's one of my pet peeves. Apologies.

From Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: en·vi·ron·ment
Pronunciation: \in-ˈvī-rə(n)-mənt, -ˈvī(-ə)r(n)-\
Function: noun
Date: 1827
1 : the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded
2 a : the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival b : the aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community
3 : the position or characteristic position of a linguistic element in a sequence
4 : a computer interface from which various tasks can be performed <a programming environment>
A vacuum is contradictory to Entry 1, since it is equal to a lack of said circumstances, objects, and conditions. Entry 2a contradicts because a vacuum can't act upon anything. Entry 2b is not applicable. Entry 3 is not applicable. Entry 4 is not applicable. So, in Arp's absence, I would have to conclude, Bob, that your attempt to split hairs and define environment to encompass vacuum, is incorrect. We make our living with the language, we should have command of it. It's one of my pet peeves.

Funny jet, but vacuum is indeed something that constitutes an environment.
And actually, the moon does not exist in a total vacuum. It has a tiny bit of atmosphere, on the order of hundreds of thousandths of ours. It is also constanly bombarded by solar and stellar radiation. So there is something there. And even if it were total vacuum, that would indeed be the surrounding environment.
I am impressed by your ability to look something up in the dictionary. I am disappointed at your inability to understand what you read.
Vacuum does not equate to non-existence.
To be a little more bitchy, whiny, and specific. On point 2, look up the effects of vacuum upon a human being for example, and then come back and talk about whether or not a vacuum can have an effect on something.
Did you skip science class too?

Big news! Initial results are back! Not only did they find water, but they have already determined that it's the result of Acid Rain! Remember Acid Raid? Ever wonder where it went? Well, it went to the Moon, and it's caused by the wretched, excessive wealth of the United States, and must be stopped before the Moon dissolves entirely! We must all call our congressmen, and demand a Moon Environment Protection treaty be signed limiteing American energy consumption for the common Moon good (and also Cap & Trade.) The Moon does have an enviroment, you know. Stop Acid Moon Rain Now!
God Bless Us, Every One.
