Census worker hanged with 'fed' on body

The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word 'fed" was scrawled on the dead man's chest.

The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky.

Not to change the subject, and I feel bad for the dead guy and all, but how is this census going to work? I haven't got any forms in the mail yet. During the last census, we got a big form in the mail. Never seen any takers.

I suspect Mr Census guy walked into a something he shouldn't have seen.
I am surprised they found him. Possibly his killer wanted to send a message to the others.

They still hang revenuers in eastern KY?????? That is news to me.

I have to agree on finding the guy. There are way too many holes in the ground to hide the results of sins committed. Of course, you have to be prepared to fight a bear to go into a hole in the ground like that.

Interesting article, but why do they assume that all Appalachians still reflexively hate the federal government for crap that happened before the Civil War?

I know some among us are still fighting the CW -- at least in their heads -- but, that's beside the point...

Thanks to the interstate system and mass media, Appalachia's social and cultural isolation from the rest of the country has been eroding for decades. But the author seems to have preconceived notions that most are still running around barefoot with muskets protecting their 'shine stills.

I think it's safe to say that this was an isolated incident which had nothing to do with some perceived "war against the feds", at least in greater Appalachia.

They ain't barefoot, they have their "work boots." They ain't packing muskets, but they do regularly carry a twelve-gauge or a 30 caliber riffle.
