The U.S. Census released figures this week from its annual American Community Survey showing that roughly 19 percent of West Virginians report having a disability, more than any other state. The national average is 12 percent.

Every day around here is like waking up in a fat nightmare. I remember a time (see my post about local women in the early 80s) when to be fat was very unusual. I see people now that I used to have to pay 2-bits a gander in a side show. It hurts my eyes to walk down Capitol Street these days.
This is why I leave each year and go to a country where all the people are of a very normal weight, no matter the age. It's like waking up in a dream! Take this lady for instance: She's a friend of mine, 42 years old. Her mother looks good also... (see below) and she's 60!
So I pose this question to you: What would you rather wake-up to each day... the girl in my first post, or these ladies?

CoolBreeze, I fear that you're point might be misconstrued by some.
Clearly, obesity is problematic as a medical condition. And, the people in CoolBreeze's pictures are, indeed, quite attractive, to be sure. Surely, there's more to people than "trophy" looks. As far as the one next to which I'd prefer to wake up, well, I can't really say based solely on these, or any, pictures. After all, I'm not exactly Mr. Universe (or even Mr. Potomac Valley, for that matter) but, with all humility, I'd like to think I have something to offer a relationship other than my appearance.
Here's the thing that gets me: This state (and especially this county) has health Nazis that spend an inordinate amount of time and taxpayers money telling businesses that their customers cant smoke. Even the Casino here has threatened to move the city boundaries into the next country where smoking is legal. In the meantime, the WV state attorney general has decided to start a full blown investigation of a little beerjoint who dared to display a blow-up cigarette pack that was memorabilia from the Charlotte Motor Speedway's Winston Cup. The local health dept sent an OBESE woman official to cite this little beerjoint 5 times in the same night. Every person in there was healthier than she was. And after ALL this... they are too coward to tackle the REAL health issue facing the state.
Here's a little something that a former state health official told me two years ago: He said that smoking was SO far down the list of health related issues at this point that it didn't even show-up on the radar screen. He said obesity will break our bank, and is the biggest health threat this state has seen since Cholera. Have you noticed the around the clock diabetes commercials these past few years? It's all because of obesity.
It's not easy to keep a proper weight, and for most of us it's almost impossible. But self discipline and respect for yourself and your partner go a long way to not only make you look better, but feel better too. Needless to say, if your partner is a dumptruck, then you care less also. Both of you can look like the girl in the top photo and then complain when people point fingers as being shallow. Fact is, these fat chickens are about to come home to roost. Even medical procedures in hospitals are useless or impossible due to this new "fat age" of ours. So I see people living shorter lives for the first time in decades, while breaking the bank in one last attempt to stay alive.
I'm no health nut myself. I smoke, I'm at least 15 pounds overweight, and I don't always eat the best foods. But I'll be damned if I'll have to be buried in a piano box and hauled to the grave on a forklift.

Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh says President Barack Obama’s plan to control healthcare is a pivotal point in his quest to control every aspect of Americans' lives.
Limbaugh, appearing Thursday on NBC’s “Jay Leno Show,” said the Democratic plan will regulate everything that affects healthcare costs, right down to what Americans should eat, drink, and drive.
“We've got enough mistakes the federal government runs,” Limbaugh said. “We don't need to compound it with more programs. The market will take care of it[self] . . . there's no reason to turn it all upside down.”
The ulterior motive behind the Democratic plan to take over healthcare concerns Limbaugh the most.
“Forget the intricacies of healthcare,” he said. “If the government gets control of healthcare, that's the single best way that they get to control every aspect of our lives: what we eat, what we drive. It all will have an impact on healthcare costs — their responsibility via our taxes — and it's just a mechanism whereby government grows and grows and grows and we lose liberty and freedom to it. That's the single best way they get to control every aspect of our lives."
Limbaugh recalled the 2008 campaign, when Obama promised he would usher in a new utopia in America: no partisanship, no more red state/blue states — a post-racist with no more racial acrimony.
Instead, “Look at how divided this country is right now," he said. Obama’s "approval numbers are plummeting. People who voted for him did not think this is what they were going to get. Tell Obama, ‘No, we don’t want you owning car companies; no, we don’t want you running the banks; no, we don't want you taking over student loans; and, no, we don’t want nationalized healthcare.’"
The government should let the market take its course instead of bailing out segments such as the auto industry. “Let them do bankruptcy first, or go out of business. That's just the way it works. We haven't saved them; we saved the unions.”
Limbaugh chided Obama for what he called his “five-minute career” in which the president “never [ran] a business and is now running [a] car company.
“You know more about [running a car company] than he does,” Limbaugh told Leno. “You own more cars than Obama's ever seen. Just because General Motors goes under, it doesn't mean people can't buy cars. People already weren't buying the cars for a reason. The market will fix itself for people far better than a bunch of people in Washington with no experience in it, tinkering in it and trying to control it.
The $700 billion the government disbursed in the Troubled Asset Relief Program was a giant scam, Limbaugh said.
"If we don't give them $700 billion in the next 24 hours, the world financial system will crash," he deadpanned. Now, "we're hearing that if we don't do healthcare by August, the healthcare system will crash. No, we didn't need to give them $700 billion.”
The biggest problem the nation faces now, Limbaugh said, is the subprime mortgage crisis.
“The Bush administration tried to regulate this and tried to get this brought under control because it made no sense,” he said. “ACORN was out forcing banks — pressuring banks — to lend money to people that couldn't pay it back, all under the guise of, ‘We must have affordable housing.’"

If I were 15 or 20 years younger, I WOULD be somewhere else. You see, a funny thing happened in the last 25 years: WE became the Socialists and THEY became the Capitalists. (at least where I go). Fact Is I have more freedom there than I do here now. Going over there reminds me of how it USED to be here. When I return, I feel like like have to look over my shoulder constantly just to make sure that I haven't broken any stupid laws that have been enacted these past 20 years or so.
Example: Here just outside of St Albans is a very old and famous swimming area on the Coal River at the Falls. Generation after Generation (including me) grew up swimming there. About two or 3 years ago a kid drowned. So what did the government do to pander to the kids mom? They made it illegal to swim there ever again. THIS is a very simple example of the government picking, picking, picking away at our freedoms and taking away our responsibility for ourselves. So.... you're not responsible for smoking, the cigarette makers made you do it. You're not responsible for being 100 pounds overweight, the fast food restaurants made you do it. The list goes an and on, and eventually even the Big Mac will be outlawed. So if you want to talk Socialist, talk about the U.S.
