Earl Benton was a photographer with the Charleston Daily Mail for 45 years. I first met Earl in 1969 and worked under him in the early 70s as a photographer myself. Earl was one of the nicest guys I'd ever met. He took many thousands of photographs that you would recognize if you saw them, from the Buffalo Creek Flood to the Silver Bridge collapse and everything before and after.
Here's a little trivia for you:
In the Navy in World War II, he served as personal photographer to Adm. Chester Nimitz, commander of the Pacific Fleet. He also developed film for correspondents in the Pacific, including famed Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. He made the print of Rosenthal's iconic shot at Iwo Jima.
