I'm curious what those of you on here who support the FCC's "fleeting expletive" rule think should happen to 103.5 WTOP-FM (and its two simulcast stations, 103.9 WTLP in Braddock Heights, MD and 107.7 WWWT-FM in Manassas, VA) if anyone complains about the f-bomb that went over the air this past Friday morning. The radio trades have been buzzing about it. Bonneville could potentially face a maximum fine of $975,000 if each station of the three stations is hit with a maximum fine ($325,000) for an indecency violation.

If we're going to be consistent, they need to be fined the full amount. All three stations. And while we're at it, lets personally fine McDonnell $325,000 for saying it, also the host another $325,000 for allowing it on the air. Hell, we might have to fine the producer as well.

Doesn't matter that it's one of the best news stations in the country. (Well, used to be.) Fine them.

I personally disagree with FCC on the issue of fining stations and/or persons for "fleeting explicative." I feel that a mistake is a mistake and there should be a much more sensible punishment for a first offense (if this is a first offense).

Having said that, with delay technology readily available and relatively simple to install and use, there is no excuse for this making it over the air.

In the old days you would hear the pop of the relays as the "D" button was pushed and a jingle would repeat until the word(s) passed. No one is on the "D" button anymore? (as in dump button)

There is no excuse to fine stations $325k per offense, regardless of market size.

I don't see how some of you small market operators can have absolutely no problem with this, esp considering how much satellite-fed programming that is beyond your control you all air. Under the current rules, all it takes is for something to slip and someone in your home market to write a complaint to the FCC. Then you are potentially liable for that kind of fine, regardless of whether or not it originated in your home studio...

But, hey, if that kind of governmental tyranny is supposed to somehow make us a better country, then, by all means, enjoy your sleepless nights.

Another F Bomb Wednesday night:

NEW YORK - A veteran New York City news anchor flubs a line and an obscene catch phrase goes viral on the Internet.

Ernie Anastos of Fox affiliate WNYW was bantering with the weatherman Wednesday night when he cheerfully dropped an F-bomb on the air. What he likely intended to say was, "Keep plucking that chicken."

Anastos didn't appear to recognize the error, though co-anchor Dari Alexander's eyes bugged out after he said it.

Just before the flub, Anastos told weatherman Nick Gregory, "It takes a tough man to make a tender forecast," a play on an old chicken commercial.
