Art or Crap? You decide.

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Art or Crap? You decide.

Post by CoolBreeze »

Here in Charleston, another piece of "art" is being erected in front of the mighty Clay Center. This bad boy cost nine hundred thousand dollars. Here's a photo I shot today:

And here's where I saw this a few years ago:

I like it.
Maybe not to the tune of $900,000 ... but I still like it.

The piece is titled, "Robert C. Byrd Triumphant."

Enjoy. My road is still crumbling.

It is a pretty neat sculpture.

I am not normally into the "junk" as art, but this has a nice blending of materials.

But JB's road still needs fixed and that construction on I79 needs wrapped up by the middle of October so I don't spin a bearing in backlog on my way home.

You sure that second picture isn't a Photoshop job, Jerry ...

Of COURSE the second pictures Photoshop! But if you have to ask, that means the "art" really DOES resemble junk! :P

So, this statue actually exists at the Clay Center?
I can take my kids to see it?

It looks like a Dish Network set-up designed by Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali.

Unfortunately, the first photo is real and the thing is in front of the Clay Center.

In this work of art, I see a Boone county satellite dish (still pointed at the porn bird)
Mounted on a old tree trunk. I see another tree has fallen into it with part of a dish remaining.
I see sheet metal parts from a scrapped Firebird that have blown into the trees.
It represents dispair.

No...I don't think those are Firebird parts. Not enough rust on them. And no traces of the "screaming chicken" hood decal. Even what looks like patina is too uniform for a Firebird.

Not only that, but with all due respect, CoolBreeze, there's something about the first picture that strikes me as, well, wrong. The shadows and the depth seem out of kilter, as if it, too, were Photoshopped. Also, the base seems to be resting on top of the grass, not sunk into it. I'll have to take your word for it, as I cannot prove otherwise.

That's what I thought after studying the picture. I've never seen a statue just sunk in the grass with no concrete or anything around it. The statue seems superimposed on the grassy area, not permanently mounted there. That's why I asked about whether the statue was actually at the Clay Center. I wondered if both photos were a Photoshop hack job.

I DID clean up around the base of the "art" so that people wouldn't be distracted by the construction still going on. Here's a completely untouched photo:

And here's the newspaper story with a few early-on construction photos:
