Rockefeller to seize internet

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Wow... that stance looks familiar... like back when the Republican's ruled the roost and the Demoncrats wanted to be assheads.
It didn't matter. The Republicans did what they wanted without listening to anyone else anyway.

This attitude has become a hallmark of being a conservative.
Again, I'm incredulous. The propaganda you must feed on! On this health care debacle, the GOP in both houses are shut out of the committees, have had 100% of ammendments offered shut down, and the DEmocrats are coonsidering the use of the so-called "Nuclear Option" to pass this bill without the full vote of the SEnate, which even some Democrats like Byrd say is wrong. How do you exptraoplate the fact that Democrats in majority in both houses are condcuting business as if the GOP did not exist to the extent that members of those house are saying they have never in their lifetimes seen such partisan brickbatting of the minority opinion, into the concept that a near-helpless GOP is.. well, as you say? I say God Bless the opposition, I say God Bless those cretins who for the purpose of their own political and financial benefit are trying to compromise the greatness of this country, God Bless those who are trying to stop the Obama Marxists and the Pelosois and Franks of this government before they recast the laws of this country into a form that pleases their own ideas of a Marxist Utopia where they, of course, are the greatest amoung equals.

Mein Gott. Do you really believe that? You are FUBAR. Sabotaging Carter's attempts? That's such an outrageous twist of history I can only gape open-mouthed, beyond reasonable comment. Are you old enough to remember the Hostage Crisis? I sure am, and do. God Bless Ronald Reagan.
I absolutely believe it, and people who were there have written about it. Senile Ronnie is not the Patron Saint of Goodness you want him to be. And, for what it's worth, I'm probably older than you are. What's the point?
Hoosier, which is it - you were just screaming your head off about the Patriot Act because GB43 proposed it and didn't really care about it per se, or you care about too much government power but are supporting suspension of of the 1st Amd. because your man is in power? Me, I like laws that benefit everybody, not just the guy with the power. I liked the Patriot Act, I have some concerns but looking at the details I think it is just, useful and Constitutional.
Huh? Your first sentence makes no sense at all but I'll take a stab at it anyway. We lost a hell of a lot more freedom under the PA than we'll ever lose under what is proposed here. You saw "Rockefeller" and "Obama" and made your judgment about this law, and, of course, being a die-hard conservative, there is no more open discussion with you. Everything was already decided forever until the end of time after you heard those two names.

Under the Patriot Act, I can accuse you of being a terrorist. The gov't can then take you and hold you indefinitely without charging you. And that doesnt' bother you?

Here's the deal. I'm willing to die for my freedom and my country. That means I am willing to take the chance that I will be a victim of a terrorist attack on my home soil rather than give up any of my freedoms. I would rather be killed in a plane hijacking then have to take off my shoes to get on the damn plane. I would rather take the chance of being targeted by Al-Qaeda then have my phone tapped by the government. I would rather have my head sliced off than have to have a national identity card or show a passport to vacation in Cancun.
I believe that to be a small price to pay.

And I believe that any law that uses the word "Patriot" is about anything but patriotism.

I wasn't equating them as they are entirely different things. It is more a matter of overall philosophy. It wasn't my intention to stir up shit. I just didn't get it. I still don't. I should clarify my questions for you and Jet and for anyone else.

Is this not an anti-terrorism measure? If not, why or what makes you think it is something else? If it is a anti-terrorism measure why are you guys against it considering your views on anti-terrorism measures previous to this one?

As far as the free speech and "obscenity" on OTA broadcasts, I know we disagree and why. The reason I brought that up in my original question wasn't to make the internet bill and our old argument the same thing. It was to illustrate my confusion about your thoughts on this particular thing because you support banning words and subjects for the purpose of protecting people but do not support turning off the internet to protect people.

I'm really not trying to pull a slick semantics thing. I'm actually confused by what appears to be a reversal of philosophy. That's all.

So not true. Jet is an American citizen.

Good for you. I, on the other hand, would prefer you take off your shoes rather than have the airplane you're riding on crash into a building I might be occupying. The isn't Bobworld.

My point was if your view of that era was so inverted you must not have first-hand memories of that era. They say the proof is in the pudding. Carter's results vis-a-vis the Hostage Crisis was two pathertic helicopters burnt in the desert, poor American hostages held without action for 400+ days. Reagan's results were Hostages released on the day Reagan was innaugurated. You can spin that any old way, but I saw what happened and I know what that means to me. Mean old Reagan, scaring those poor innocent Muslims.

Reagan. He was just a man, he had limitations, he had blind spots, sure. But he was the best thing that happened to this country in years. God Bless Ronald Reagan. You know, I lived through that era of everybody on TV trying to make him out to be stupid or a warmonger or whatever. In the intervening years, I've heard all the myths that have been cultivated, greedy Regan 80's all that bs. I figured in the end the long-reaching media would eventually diminish Reagan's true stature. But when he died, I was really struck by the outpouring of respect that was showered on him, not by the TV elitists who were so shocked at that outpouring, but by the real people of this country. People in work clothes, filing through the Capitol Rotunda. People in suits and ties. Cub Scouts. Policemen. Men in uniform and VFW caps, stopping to silently salute. People standing outside their cars along the highway in Californina for miles and miles and miles, watching Regan's funeral procession speed by. Then I knew, reminded of what I always knew, that this country is still the great country it always was, that no amount of spinning or twisted thinking or hacking and hewing against the pillars of reason and decency and looking out for the other guy, upon which this country is built, will ever bring this country to her knees. Reagan was a man that believed in this country. He believed in the basic goodness of people and believed they ought to be free to live as good a life as they could make for themselves. That's what I believe. And for the same reason that you and all the king's horses and all the king's men can't pull down Reagan's spirit in the hearts of Americans who lived through that era, is the same reason that I know, deep down in my heart, that neither you nor the Kennedy Family nor Barney Frank nor Barack Obama nor the Unions Nor ACORN nor the Apollo Group nor any form of government that wants social justice as revealed by the tenants of radical Marxism will ever prevail. We are the people of this country. We believe this is a great country. We believe the way this country operates is pretty darned good for everybody. We believe this country enjoys God's Blessing. We believe the United States are the light of the world. And we are not cattle to be stampeded or tricked or maneauvered, not for long. So call up the editor at Mother JOnes, and tell her to double her efforts, because the American Regular Guy is getting pissed and refuses to reject Reagan Americanism, and therefor the latest wave of the Worker's Revolution is careening once again towards the ditch.

Jet Black wrote:...I want the FCC to maintain a limit on profanity and sexual content on broadcast TV and radio which upholds a reasonable community standard, nothwithstanding the belief that absolute limitations can not be strictly defined to everyone's satisfaction. That, however, is a damn far cry from abdicating our 1st Amd. right by allowing the govt to shut down civilian access to the internet.
This is the mental disconnect I have here: How can you trust the government to regulate potty mouth words, violence, and sex scenes, while at the same time be outraged that they would try to censor political, religious, and other forms of "real" speech? This is the same government we're talking about here. The FCC is not a clergy committee; they're bureaucrats at the mercy of Congress and the President.

We've debated this topic many times before, and I think we've established that we all agree on "reasonable community standards", particularly for certain times of day. But why give the government so much power to regulate content with fines large enough to bankrupt small broadcasters? I would think that most broadcasters and the communities they serve should be able to handle this issue themselves.

If a broadcaster is airing something is too racy or offensive for their communities, they will hear about it, one way or another.

Of course, every radio and TV has an "off" button, but, I've digressed enough...

As for my liberal/conservative statement, I was broadly generalizing and being goofy, but it's really not far from the truth.

I want a president like Reagan who believes in capitalism, strong national defense, and the greatness of the American spirit, while at the same time strictly respecting our personal liberties and first amendment rights.

Is this too much to ask?

Sorry folks. I hate to do this but this thread is now close. The political bickering has gone to far on both sides. There are place to take this. But the last time I check this isn't the VOT. So it's going into the lockbox. Hated that I had to kill the party. But here. Have the new Auto-tune the news.
