A top 5 worst video ever! (and it's from Ohio)

The Lemon Pipers (from Oxford Ohio) had a hit called "Green Tambourine" in 1968 that shot up to #1. They hated the song along with their next one called "Rice in my hair", (both written for them) because they considered themselves to be a rock band, and not a Bubblegum band. None the less they went through the motions of appearing on TV to promote themselves.

In this video taken from Cincinnati TV station WCPO, you can see how much they hated the song, the world, their lives, and even the stupid teddy bears that the TV station for some unknown reason thought would be cute. Yes... I meant "Rice is nice". After viewing the video below, I was mesmerized by the singers embarrassment.

I dson't think the music video was close to being perfected until the early 80s MTV craze hit the cable channels.
Most stuff from the 60s and 70s was simply roll tape and lip sync to the 45 RPM record.

Oh of course! But it's not the technical aspects of these videos that's so interesting, but the performers attitudes (and who could blame them?) that really showed their disdain for what they were doing.

You wouldn't have ANY of the post-1985 music that you listen to were it not for 1956, 1959, 1964, 1967, 1969, 1974, 1976 and 1979.

Records were made in studios.
You went to Grants, Hills, Jimmy Morgan's or Alfie's to buy them.
Movies were made on film.
You went to a theater to view them.
Bands only source of promotion was through network TV and radio.
There was no cable or internet.
So there.
1985 was about right on the cusp of "When Entertainment Became Cheap".
And most of the music made after it sucks.

For me, music was the greatest between 1961 and 1977.
I love the early to mid 60s the best.
The competing factions of Elvis, the girl groups, the British invasion, Roy Orbison, Frankie Valli, beach music, the Phil Spector stuff, et al.
The heavy sound of the early 70s intrigued me too, along with most of the pop music of that era.
Elton John, Boston, Foreigner, Bee Gees, Three Dog Night, David Bowie, McCartney, and all the one hit wonders of that era.
Some early disco was good, too, although I hated a lot of it back then.
I started losing interest with the gooey prom ballads of the late 70s and the rap and arid British punk stuff of the very early 80s.
I couldn't name 20 songs I like that hit the charts between 1982 and 2009.

Come on, now, folks.

Let's be honest. Although it might not appeal to some tastes, there really is some good, new music out there. A lot of it. The problem is that there's also a lot of bad, new music out there, too. As has been duly noted, the technology to produce and distribute a recording is so inexpensive and commonplace that we're exposed to a lot of good and bad, now.

A lot of the reason we find music unappealing to us is that we judge it by what we feel it ought to be (i.e., that with which we're familiar) rather than judging it for what it is.

But, I gotta say that I agree with Scott on this one. I always thought that "Rice is Nice" was a nifty little tune. It won't be found near the Gustav Mahler in my collection, but it's (as a musician/music teacher friend of mine would say) "harmless."

90 percent of everything is crap. Among the other 10 percent, a good chunk of that is crap. Interspersed are some good, very good, and astonishly excellent material.
What we do as broadcasters is not related to the above.

Maybe it has more to do with getting older, but very few artists out there today can invoke the same passion for music that I had 30-40 years ago..... there are a few, but most of what is out there today as "new music" is crap(IMHO).

I still listen to Sirius Hits 1 more than any other channel.

I can count the number of hours I've listened to the decades channels in the last three months on one hand.

It's not that the music is bad... It's because they don't mix in anything new. Of course, that would defeat the purpose of the decades channels, but anyway...

I've found that as time goes on, the contrast between the music of the decades becomes more noticeable. Some music from the late 90's and even the early 00's sounds dated to me at this point.

"Dated" isn't bad, however. There are still many classics that I love, but the thought of never hearing new music mortifies me. What I know is never enough. I always need to hear more. Yet, I'm at the age where people supposedly become less open to new stuff... Go figure.

We must always strive to learn more, regardless of our views and level of knowledge. I understand what you mean about "supposedly" beoming less open to new stuff. My more youthful friends often find it surprising that I'm even aware of, let alone somewhat conversed in, "their" music.
