Hey, when you'r out of work, you got a lot of time on your hands. I've worked out the last 5 days in a row. Of course, I can barely walk right now. But I look.....MARVELOUS!

Re: It's that's moving up then I'm.... working out.
Here's my Zune protocol...
I have a "currents" playlist that I keep at 115 songs. When I discover new stuff, I add to it. But I always have to remove some tracks that I get burned out on. This way, the mix always sounds fresh.
It's always on shuffle, so I can hear the general playlist but not always in the same order.
I chose "115" because it's not so few that it gets stale fast, but not so many that the songs get "lost" and never heard.
There's also a single folder with 1000+ songs for the "classics" -- mostly anything 2005 or earlier. I shuffle that as well when I'm in a JACK mood.

Because, personally I thought the Ferguson version was...uh, how do I phrase this kindly..."monsterously lame".
But, hey. It's just my opinion. Maybe I just never "got used to it" as much as the bigger hit version...

Re: It's that's moving up then I'm.... working out.
Okay, I've done my research. I've listened to both versions repeatedly and if I have to describe why I called the Maynard Ferguson version "monsterously lame", I would say that it comes down to one very important variable: production quality.
I will admit that the "parts" of the Ferguson version (mainly lead guitar, rhythm section and background vocals) sound MUCH better today than they did thirty plus years ago. As a matter of fact, after a few listening samples, it almost sounded EXACTLY like the Conti version...which is something I never would have said back in the day. Thus having done my sampling, the Ferguson version sounds better today than it did back then, sounds almost identical to the Conti version, and the separating factor that I had "always heard" that made a difference between the two putting the Conti version on top comes down to production. The Conti version just SOUNDS more like a hit.
But then again I thought "Jive Talkin'" sucked in 1975 and consider it genius today.
And in case you did not know it, the drummer for The Hardy Boys was the drummer on "Stayin' Alive". It's a very interesting article...Bob Crowder, drummer for The Hardy Boys

Re: It's that's moving up then I'm.... working out.
Scott, you make very cogent points (as always). Allow me to explain my take on this.
My suggestion that the Ferguson version has it all over the Conti version is based on a couple of things. First, this thread calls for "workout" tunes. The Ferguson recording has a slightly quicker tempo (gotta keep that heart rate up there). Also, it has more musical moments of drama, just to make things a bit interesting for the listener (who may or may not be working out), including, but by no means limited to, Ferguson's dazzling, if not freakish, high-note soloing. I will agree with you that, from a production standpoint, Ferguson's version sounds a bit, dare I say, top-heavy (i.e., somewhat bereft of low tones), as did many of the recordings of the day (Conti's included).
While I think the Conti version is probably the "definitive" one, I find that the Ferguson arrangement has more energy, enthusiasm and immediacy. Particularly given the long, trilled note in the middle and the very high note at the end. The Conti version might sound like a "hit" to you, but the Ferguson version sounds like a "workout" to me!

Re: It's that's moving up then I'm.... working out.
Some thoughts on the MF thing. Jazz fusion being what it is, or was, a disco-ized version of anything can hardley be berated for being just that. Conti's original was best, MF's homage was great in it's own way. Hey, just because The Allman Brothers Band's Dreams is a masterwork doesn't mean Molly Hatchet's cover is not excellent in it's own way. What is the use of ranking music? Music is good for you or not. Can't we all just get along? All I am saying, is let's give peace a chance.
Speaking of Rocky... I've seen the film recently on cable, and in the scene where Adrian visits Rocky's apartment for the first time, Rocky turns on the record player and the song I remember, which was the B-side of the Gonna Fly Now single as I recall, does not seem to be the song that is now in the film. I forget the name of this song. I've looked on the currently=available soundtrack CD and I don't hear the song I remember. Am I crazy? Do I just mis-remember? Anybody know anything about this?

No. I no longer "run" up the step to the art museum when I take visitors on a tour of the city. I park the land yacht and escort the people to the foot of the steps and then laugh at the them while pointing and making gestures as they imitate Rocky. If I am lucky, the drag queens will be out and they too will join in the action. Then to make up with the visitors, I drive them to south Philly where I purchase for them the best cheesesteak in Philly. Pat's? Geno's? Hell No! Tony Luke's on Oregon Ave. is the best cheesesteak in south Philly and you can have you cheesesteak in a proper sit down atmosphere with a beer of a glass of wine for the ladies.Jet Black wrote:Speaking of Rocky...
