If you're looking for natural beauty ... I'd say the Grandview area along I-77/I-64 (near Beckley), Pipestem State Park, and rafting down the New River Gorge. If you're looking for small town charm, Lewisburg, Charles Town, and Martinsburg are on the top of my list. If you're looking for a really nice city with all the amenities and a high quality of life, go with Morgantown.

As my Dad used to say: "Boy, what's going through your head?"! Now granted, I have had only had two "experiences" in that exact particular area of WV and I will say that both resembled what I would describe as being as close to "hell on Earth" as I ever care to imagine.

Done it many a time. Fond memories. Not like Grandview...

Here are my choices, numbered but in no particular order:

1. Biking from Ireland to Wildcat
2. Fishing from Franklin to Upper Tract (granted, it ain't as breathtaking since '85)
3. Drive US Route 219 from where it enters the state from MD down to where it exits the state into VA

If you want to get in to "Scottyland" treats, pull a couple of these "lesser known scenic attractions" off:

1. The Unleaved Forest
2. The Tree @ Becky Creek
3. The Underground River (not the one you're thinking of, probably)
4. "The Big Rock"
5. The Fairmont Water Tanks
6. The Morgantown "Steps"
7. The southern Lewis County "Moonshine Mall" (don't know if it's still there or not)

Whatever place your feet are on the ground at any particular time.

I love the whole state, even the warts (and the half-yankee West Virginians north of Ripley).

Don't get me wrong. I'm not blind to the bad parts or the ugly parts (that includes economics and conditions).

There's a much higher bad/ugly ratio in most of the other places I've lived.

Spend a week in Charleston during Festivall. Go to the 4th of July street fair in Logan. Experience game day in Morgantown (tell me you don't get a chill and almost tear up when The Pride of West Virginia blasts the refrain from Country Roads). Go see Jakob Dylan and Willie Nelson at the Clay Center one night and then go see Tool in Huntington the next. Try the state fair in Lewisburg. Have a Hillbilly Hotdog. Get some barbecue and a bucket of beers at Tomahawk's. Spend a warm fall Sunday sitting on a porch, looking at the leaves, and listening to the creek. Watch the coal roll out and the ATV riders roll in. Go to Chester and laugh because you know you are on the tip of the massive middle finger West Virginia is flipping the rest of the world. Hunting, fishing, whitewater, skiing, riding, and just laying in the grass at Hawk's Nest are things everyone should do at least once (except the skiing-I hate skiing, but Blues, Brews, and BBQs at Snowshoe kicks ass). All of this and a thousand other little things add up to much more than the three of four big things that make it less than paradise.

There are lots of other states and places I've liked living in or even loved. There is no other place I love like this.

I still think our state motto should be "Fuck Virginia."


This is my argument.

It is indicative of our state's history and origin.

It denotes our overall attitude toward the old dominion.

It differentiates us from Virginia. I'm sick of telling people I live in Saint Albans, West Virginia and them asking me, "Is that anywhere near Richmond?"

It's terribly funny. The plates on cars, welcome signs at the borders, and the state seal will be constantly hilarious.


We should also take a page from Futurama and force Virginia to change their name to East West Virginia.


I'm never going to be governor if I keep saying this stuff publicly.

Twin Falls State Park golf course. A hidden gem.
Tamarack. Make all the jokes you want, it's a great place to have a relaxing lunch. Great food at ridiculouslylow prices. It makes you wonder why anybody is down the hill eating at the rest stop.
