WSAZ-DT off air

Post by genlock »

Tuesday night
9:30 or so past 10:00 pm.
Storm, guess generator didn't start.
Lots of lightning, maybe worse problems.

There was a "trees down, wires down" 911 call on Barker Ridge. Generator fail probably correct.

WOWK has a microwave link that goes out in heavy rain-xmtr was still on.

WSAZ-TV has always had a generator at the transmitter site. don't know the age WOWK has a generator that is several years old at the transmitter and it has a generator at the studio. the one at the studio has a lot of trouble with it's block heater busting and letting all the water out. Both the studio and transmitter generators should run once a week. transmitter on Monday and studio on Saturday. at ;east they did when i was in charge.

Thanks for the clarification on the generator -- it makes sense that WSAZ has one at the transmitter site. I know that they didn't have one at the studio during my time there, though I don't think any of the TV stations I ever worked at had a generator at the studio location.

The last three stations I've worked for have all had generators both at studio and transmitter. It's a must-have where I am now as we head into hurricane season.

Public Broadcasting has a generator at the Charleston and Beckley studio facilities.
The important transmitters have generators.

Does Huntington (WPBY-TV) even have (or need) a studio anymore?
I thought all the WVPB television stations were nothing more than translators originating in Morgantown or Grandview or somewhere ...

:?
Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

Nope, it was turned over to MU SOJMC several years ago. The studio being renovated by the $800,000 state grant is the old WPBY studio.

I'm not involved with the television side so I don't know what else is in store, but they performed asbestos abatement last week.

WSAZ has a generator at studio and at the transmitter. I know they run the studio generator test at least weekly. Many times I have driven down the alley behind the station and it is running, I assume it is a test. Generators only work in the case of the loss of commercial power. Not if there is an internal failure. Even with lots of UPS s_ _ t happens.

I'm glad to hear that -- you don't know how important a studio generator is until you lose power for an extended period of time leading up to a newscast.

How many on here remember network 'news by candlelight' in the great eastern power grid failure?
