Skip Mahaffey wasn't able to generate the ratings for WFUS that he had in Tampa on WQYK-FM. As much disdain as I feel toward many of the decision-makers over at 4002 Gandy Blvd. (and the CC suits in San Antonio), it was a bold move to steal away Mahaffey and to use him to help launch a new country station to take on WQYK-FM, which had (and still has) a strong following from country fans in the market. Unfortunately for Mahaffey and CC Tampa, his audience from WQYK-FM didn't make the move to WFUS as they had hoped they would.
The flip of classic rock WTBT to country on what became WFUS worked to a degree. At the time of the launch, Infinity/CBS was protecting WQYK-FM against a flip with a flanker known as "Outlaw Country" on the weaker-powered WYUU signal. Less than four months after WTBT/WFUS went country, Infinity/CBS flipped WYUU to Spanish. But it can be very difficult to take on a legacy country station -- look at how long WDGG had to fight to catch up with WTCR-FM in Huntington.
