Gots Me A New TV!!!

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Gots Me A New TV!!!

Post by Scott Reppert »

Went with the Vizio 37" from Sam's Club. Really nice employee at Sam's, when hearing that I wanted to pay half and charge half but did not have a Discover Card, told me what to do: take your Visa Card to Wal-Mart and charge a Gift Card for half of the TV amount. Then bring the Gift Card to Sam's using that as half the TV payment. With that said, here's what I got:

My "Eclectic Video Bookcase"...

Just thought you all would like to know, seeing as how many of you had input on my choice. Only drawback: NO LITERATURE IN THE BOX! NONE! Sure you can download it off the 'net, but YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! Plus I need to register it (I also got one year of the extended warranty...just in case).

As you were. I'm going to go watch my all-time favorite movie. Which is in the "Eclectic Video Bookcase"...

Why is your Christmas tree still up? :)

Been up since November 1995. Moved twice since then and the tree has traveled DECORATED around 70 miles for one of those moves. Real presents under the tree. Lights always on. It's a bugger to run out of lights in July though, so that's why I always pick up 6-8 sets right at the end of Christmas clearance every year at Target.

As for pictures of the back, I'll see what I can do...

A. No ornaments..ever. Just lights and tinsel.

B. "That Thing You Do". Almost every scene has two quotable lines. Me and my friend Andi can actually have full conversations using just lines from the movie. The one most people recognize is Steve Zahn's: "A man in a really nice camper wants to put our song on the radio"...

I really enjoy that movie. I especially like the scene in the jazz club, and the studio scene at the end.

PS - The first thing you're going to find out is how nice it is to watch flicks in full 16:9. The next thing is what a pain it is deciding what aspect to watch 4:3 TV shows.

Amen, brother, amen. The DVD looks GREAT! I was hoping I didn't have to go out and purchase an additional speaker system, but I may have to...

Nice set...

I keep holding out for those prices to drop more. Black Friday is only six months and change away...

:P

I haven't put up a tree or any other decorations in years. Too much work.

For anyone in the market for a new TV. Go to Best Buy, or any other big store, and ask about discounts on floor models. I was doing my research, both online and at the various stores in the area. I decided to not accept anything less than 42" on a budget of $699. Seems impossible, but it took less than ten minutes to do just that. Don't pay any attention to the yellow floor model discount stickers, they are not set in stone. I asked for the manager as soon as I entered Best Buy. I told him I wanted the best TV I could get for less than $700 and I didn't give a damn if it came in a box. Ten minutes later I had a 50" Samsung 1080 plasma in perfect condition(one of the best TV's on the market). Price was $499+tax. I got $1,400 off the retail price. I got all the books, remote, etc., just no box. I'm a big fan of boxes, but a fourteen hundred dollar box is a little more than I wished to spend. This process is quick and VERY easy. If you're worried about potential problems, just get the best service plan they offer, and you are still $1,000 under sticker price and protected for years to come.

Speaking of boxes. Please put the girl in the box back as your avatar. As much as we all love Hot Wheels, girl in the box is hotter.

Just for your information:

A friend of mine has been in the TV repair business for 40 years. He still opens his shop 2 or 3 days a week.

His main room is FILLED with broken flat screen TVs of every type. Why? Blown out or burned out power supplies mostly. Why? Power surges mostly, and some lightning strikes. These issues are NOT covered under warranty and are VERY expensive to repair.

He says that everyone should treat these new TVs exactly like they would a good computer, and have a well-built reliable (not cheap) surge protector on the line.

In the CD rack. That's a different story...
CoolBreeze wrote:...and have a well-built reliable (not cheap) surge protector on the line.
Thanks for the reminder! I have a VERY nice one, but since I would need to do some more rearranging, I have not hooked it up yet.

As for more on the bookcase, if you want to know my ALL-TIME favorite movies, just read the list starting with "That Thing You Do" down to "Short Walk To Daylight" and you would have the list of them, in order. "A Night To Remember" and "Paper Man" would be higher if the first was in a "regular" DVD case and "Paper Man" would be higher if were not on VHS.

I'm funny that way, you know...
