Anyone still subjected to Donkey Basketball?

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Anyone still subjected to Donkey Basketball?

Post by CoolBreeze »

Back in the olden days (1971) my radio station was "forced" to play Donkey Basketball in the local high school gym in Spencer WV. I dint see a big deal about it back then, but was kinda surprised it's still an event today:

Donkey basketball is alive and well in rural America.

Invented in the 1930s, the "sport" where humans mount the beasts of burden and shoot hoops was seen as affordable Depression-era entertainment. The game morphed through the years into a popular fundraising vehicle for schools and other organizations.

But animal rights groups are crying foul. They contend the donkeys are mistreated by participants and handlers. Pressured by organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, some school districts have canceled individual donkey basketball events and others have banned the spectacles altogether.

I believe an inlaw of mine in Gallipolis played donkey ball just a few weeks ago.
Not sure which side of the saddle he was on, top or bottom.

Just after I graduated from High School, A very well respected, well liked teacher at my almamater fell from a donkey and was seriously injured. If I recall correctly, she has permanent brain damage and nearly died attempting that ridiculous excuse for entertainment.

Hey schools! Do your teachers and students a favor and bring in Stark Raven or some other no-talent asshats to perform for your students.

On a second look, I should have picked a better picture, knowing Cool or someone else is going to photoshop that to look as if I'm doing something even gayer. Great.

I've heard of this game before, but never did or nor saw it, and was seriously suprised to see how many release forms I had to sign before playing. Those donkeys are mean as hell...but what a great publicity stunt for the radio station...standing room only in Randleman, NC

Hey! Aren't you supposed to be working now? Go plan your next break. Leave the posting to us unemployed folk.

I did donkey b-ball in Huntsville in '98. The animals are indeed evil, noxious smelling and dedicated to trying to cripple you. Can't remember if I wore a helmet. Which says something, I'm just not sure what.

I've played several times. However, those days are behind me-the floor just got too hard.

Sometimes they make kids who have a prior injury wear headgear like that when out to play.
