Guesting yesterday (4/14) on Salem Radio Network’s Michael Medved Show, PBS NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer was uncharacteristically opinionated when asked by Medved for his thoughts on any attempt by Congress or the FCC to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. “What do you think of the calls by many leading Democrats — and it is coming from the Democratic side of the aisle — for governmental imposition of fairness through what is known as the Fairness Doctrine from the FCC?” Medved asked Lehrer (pictured). “I really believe in everyone having their voice,” replied the veteran news journalist. “We’ve already proved we don’t need the Fairness Doctrine. I normally don’t express my opinion on things like this, but I don’t think there’s any necessity for it. My goodness, all the opinions are out there if you work at it. For the government to reinsert itself on that particular issue is not necessary at all. Whether the Democrats or the Republicans are for or against it is irrelevant to me. I come from a ‘let the voices be heard’ school of thought.”

Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
is so hard to understand?
The FCC can't impose the "fairness" doctrine. It doesn't have the authority because it's the creation of Congress which ITSELF does not have the authority. It is prohibited from passing such a law.
Talk radio is freedom of speech. It's also the press. It's also a platform whereby the people petition their government for a redress of grievances.

Totally with you on this. Whether it's political, racy content, or "Christian hate speech", The first amendment trumps all. And that's really all there is to it.
But they nitpick over what the framers "really" meant with all of these amendments. Even worse are the "living document" maniacs who think anything in it can be modified or changed for any reason.
With that worldview, the constitution has no teeth at all.
I agree we don't need the Fairness Doctrine. But let's not go so far as to call talk radio "the press". Please. Talk radio is talk radio.
The press is what happens at the top of the hour when the talk radio host is taking a pee.
And nothing in the First Amendment gives you the right to have an FCC license. Try broadcasting hard core porn and see how long that argument works. The FCC does indeed have the authority to monitor some forms of content.
After further review, the left wing decided that rather than have the righties have a
legal reason to go after NPR, PBS and the broadcast MSM, they would rather forget
the "fairness doctrine" and leave Rush alone.
Personally, I was looking forward to a retirement career of hounding public radio to death.
Much easier to do now that digital recording is cheap and easy.
Ya gotta have a hobby, right?

Which explains why the AM band with all it's problems destroys the audience of the Black Hole of the FM band... 88.1-91.9.
Obama is missing a MAJOR source of revenue for healthcare FOR THE CHILDREN... make those stations pay tax on their revenue..
1230 WIRO still has more listeners than any of those stations in this market and more revenue.
WCMI sadly doesn't because it's part of Air America, which if it wants to actually make money should JOIN me in abolishing NPR and it's taxwaste status.
