The Fairness Doctrine train keeps gaining steam!

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

PROGRESSIVE VOICES SILENCED IN WASHINGTON

By: Bill Press

If you’re looking for a break from those conservative voices that dominate talk radio, take time out today to listen to local station Obama 1260 AM.

Providing a welcome relief from the constant Obama-bashing by Rush Limbaugh and others, you’ll hear the progressive voices of Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Lionel – or, during morning drive, my own “Bill Press Show.” Unfortunately, today’s the last day you’ll be able to do so.

As first reported by the Post’s media critic, Howard Kurtz, Dan Snyder’s Red Zebra Broadcasting Company, owner of Obama 1260, has announced plans to jettison all progressive talk and replace it with canned, pre-recorded financial advice programming.

The commercial use of public airwaves is supposed to reflect the local community. But not in Washington. On the AM dial, 630 WMAL features wall-to-wall conservative talk. So do stations 570 WTNT and 1580 WHFS. For the last two years, AM 1260 - even with a weak signal that can not be heard in downtown Washington – was the one exception. No longer. Starting Monday, February 9, our nation’s capitol, where Democrats control the House, Senate, and White House, and where Democrats outnumber Republicans ten to one, will have no progressive voices on the air.

Or maybe one. In order to mollify critics, Red Zebra has said it will add Ed Schultz to its conservative line-up on 570 AM. Which means Shultz will be outgunned in this market by at least 15 conservative talkers: Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Chris Plante, Michael Smerconish, Michael Savage, Andy Parks, Fred Grandy, Bill Bennett, Monica Crowley, Bill O’Reilly, Dennis Miller, and Lars Larsen. No matter how good Schultz is, that’s not a fair contest – nor a fair use of the public airwaves.

Unfortunately, what’s happening in Washington reflects what’s happened in one city after another across the country. In Miami, Clean Channel recently dumped progressive talk for sports: the same move made by Clear Channel stations in San Diego and Cincinnati. Sacramento abandoned progressive talk for gospel music. In fact, according to a study released by the Center for American Progress and Free Press, there are nine hours of conservative talk for every one hour of progressive talk.

Why? Station owners complain they can’t get good ratings or make any money with progressive talk, but that’s nonsense. In Minnesota, independent owner Janet Robert has operated KTNF AM 950 profitably for five years. Madison’s 92.1 just scored its highest ratings ever. And Portland, Oregon’s KPOJ soared with progressive talk from #23 in market ratings to #1. Nationwide, progressive talkers Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller have proven that, given a level playing field, they can more than hold their own in ratings – and make money for their stations.

In fact, the only reason there’s not more competition on American airwaves is that the handful of companies which own most radio stations do everything they can to block it. In many markets – witness Philadelphia, Boston, Providence, or Houston – they join in providing no outlet for progressive talk. In others, as in Washington, they limit it to a crappy signal, spend zero dollars on promotion, and soon pull the plug.

In other words, there is no free market in talk radio today. The airwaves have been taken over by an oligopoly offering conservative talk only, which totally contradicts what commercial radio is supposed to offer.

Companies are given a license to operate public airwaves – free! – in order to make a profit, yes, but also, according to the terms of their FCC license, “to operate in the public interest and to afford reasonable opportunity for the discussion of conflicting views of issues of public importance.” Stations are not operating in the public interest when they offer only conservative talk.

For years, the Fairness Doctrine prevented such abuse by requiring licensed stations to carry a mix of opinion. However, under pressure from conservatives, President Reagan’s FCC cancelled the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, insisting that in a free market stations would automatically offer a balance in programming.

That experiment has failed. There is no free market in talk radio today, only an exclusive, tightly-held, conservative media conspiracy. The few holders of broadcast licenses have made it clear they will not, on their own, serve the general public. Maybe it’s time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine - and bring competition back to talk radio.

Bill Press is working on a new book on talk radio.

Bill Press is a putz. He should know better than this.

The reason his show failed was because nobody was listening, plain and simple. Not because of some evil megacorp conspiracy against liberal talk radio.

It's pretty well established that most broadcast groups, with the exception of Salem, would let Satan himself do a radio show, if they could sell it. Much less any human who could gain and hold an audience, regardless of their political opinions.

Without getting too political, I am honestly puzzled as to why there are virtually no liberals out there who are capable of getting a large audience. Is this the audience's or the conservative talkers fault?

Press touches on the argument that 1260 has a shitty signal, even in much of DC. It's 5kw day, but highly directional to the SSE, where most of the target audience doesn't live.

Does he think he could do better on a bigger signal? Why doesn't he try to get a job on one? Why doesn't he broker his show on 1160, which has a monster day signal? Even the Greaseman did that for awhile.

Anyway, I have a problem with government mandating to stations to air certain hosts who have no listeners. The marketplace will decide if they like you of not, through voting in their diaries and PPMs.

White House: Obama Opposes 'Fairness Doctrine' Revival

A White House spokesman tells FOXNews.com President Obama opposes any move to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine.

FOXNews.com

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

President Obama opposes any move to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine, a spokesman told FOXNews.com Wednesday.

The statement is the first definitive stance the administration has taken since an aide told an industry publication last summer that Obama opposes the doctrine -- a long-abolished policy that would require broadcasters to provide opposing viewpoints on controversial issues.

"As the president stated during the campaign, he does not believe the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated," White House spokesman Ben LaBolt told FOXNews.com.

That was after both senior adviser David Axelrod and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs left open the door on whether Obama would support reinstating the doctrine.

Neal Boortz has an interesting perspective on the Fairness Doctrine.

Wow.

Boortz is on the mark. How could this POSSIBLY be enforced?

This reminds me of yesterday when Obama announced that the mortgage bail-out plan would NOT be extended to those who knew ahead of time that they could not possibly pay back their mortgages.

Huh?

So-----you're going to 'water-board' every person that applies for help to determine if they're telling the truth?

You're right---this isn't over.

(side-note: i don't think water-boarding is any more torture than having a barium enema. The only difference is, they keep going even when I tell the truth)

(side-note-addendum: if you've never had a barium enema, then you have no right to comment on this segment of the discussion)

Rush questions Obama.

The fact that the federal government issues broadcast licenses, the original purpose of which was to regulate radio signals, ought not become an excuse to destroy one of the most accessible and popular marketplaces of expression.
Thank you.

Hoosier Daddy quotes Rush in the aforementioned article:
Rush Limbaugh wrote:So as the temporary custodian of your office, you should agree that the Constitution is more important than scoring transient political victories, even when couched in the language of public interest.
I guess it never occured to him to point that out to George W. Bush.

The Republicans trying to force the anti Fairness Doctrine bill to a vote.

http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id= ... spid=30800
WASHINGTON -- February 20, 2009: Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who chairs the Senate Steering Committee, will offer the Broadcaster Freedom Act, which would block the FCC from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, as an amendment to the Voting Rights bill, which is set to be voted on next week.

President Obama said earlier this week that he does not support the return of the Fairness Doctrine, but the idea has the support of a number of prominent Democratic politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Sens. Debbie Stabenow (MI), Dick Durbin (IL), Chuck Schumer (NY), Tom Harkin (IA), and Dianne Feinstein (CA).

DeMint said, "I'm glad President Obama finally confirmed his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which attacks the right of free speech on Talk radio, but many Democrats in Congress are still pushing it. With the support of the new administration, now is the time for Congress to take a stand against this kind of censorship. I intend to seek a vote on this amendment next week so every senator is on record: Do you support free speech, or do you want to silence voices you disagree with?"

The Broadcaster Freedom Act has 29 co-sponsors. The bill has also been introduced in the House by Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN) and Greg Walden (R-OR). That bill has 177 co-sponsors.

47% Oppose Fairness Doctrine, But 51% Think Congress Likely To Bring It Back

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_ ... ng_it_back

First radio, now the Web?
Media analysts and bloggers are warning that fresh efforts to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine could go too far, following a report that one prominent Democrat (report says it's Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif) is looking into ways to apply the media control standards to the Internet.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/02 ... -internet/
FCC spokesman David Fiske also disputed the claims in the piece, saying, "We're not sure that it's an accurate article."
We're not sure? What a dodge!!!

This is one of those issues that the vast majority of the public does not totally grasp, so polls are pretty worthless.

Kind of like those iBiquity polls in 2006 that reported 30% of the respondents thought they already had a HD Radio. Hell, it's digital...

Also, the devil is in the wording. Pro-FD pollsters often word it like, "Do you think it's important that both sides of a political issue be equally and fairly heard in the public arena (broadcast radio and TV)?"

The untrained knee-jerk response will usually be, "Of course! It only seems right.", without realizing what that it would do to talk radio and first amendment rights in general.

The UK has a FD similar to what we used to have. Political talk is all but absent from the radio. While I love the BBC and their "Radio x" concepts, UK talk radio seems stale compared to what we have.

I hope we don't wind up like that...

Not only is that a slanted question, it also takes the false stance that there are merely two sides to any particular issue.

This should get interesting. Facinating Savage chose a Michigan firm.

http://www.ntsmediaonline.com/?p=2599&u ... dium=email

Talk Radio Network host Michael Savage and the Thomas More Law Center, a Michigan-based national public interest law firm, are joining forces to “protect free speech” by fighting to prevent any return of the Fairness Doctrine. “Michael Savage is the personification of what the liberals hate about conservative Talk radio,” said Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel for the Center. “Whatever form it may take, any limitations on the free speech rights of Michael Savage will result in an immediate legal action. We’re proud to represent him in this crucial battle to preserve the grand purpose of political free speech protected by the First Amendment.” The partnership of Savage and the Thomas More Law Center marks the second organization to position itself to battle any proposed reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine or similar rule. The American Center For Law and Justice also says it’s prepared to take legal action should it become necessary. ACLJ also reports that nearly a quarter-million people have signed their petition urging members of Congress to support the proposed Broadcasters Freedom Act which would prohibit any return of the so-called doctrine by the FCC or Congress.

Exactly.

Unfortunately, very important issues are usually quickly broken down into simple "for/against" terms, which leads to that line of thought.
“Michael Savage is the personification of what the liberals hate about conservative Talk radio,” said Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel for the Center. “Whatever form it may take, any limitations on the free speech rights of Michael Savage will result in an immediate legal action. We’re proud to represent him in this crucial battle to preserve the grand purpose of political free speech protected by the First Amendment.”
Good for them.

For the record, I'm in the "Savage is a nut" category at least half of the time... Yet I think his raw emotions make for great radio.
