N.J. disc jockey to part with Jenny's number

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (AP) - After five years fielding thousands of calls to one of rock 'n' roll's most celebrated phone numbers, disc jockey Spencer Potter is hanging up on Jenny.

Her seven digits are familiar to anyone who paid attention to pop music in the early 1980s: 867-5309, immortalized by the band Tommy Tutone.

Potter and his roommates requested the number on a lark for their home phone in northern New Jersey. They got it, along with about 30 to 40 calls a day.

The 28-year-old Potter says he's selling his business, A Blast Entertainment, and moving to New York. The business and the phone number are for sale on eBay, where the high bid was about $1,000 by Sunday morning.

That number used to belong to an elderly Chesapeake, Ohio woman back in the day. I remember a Herald-Dispatch article about the hundreds of calls she got, how bewildered she was in understanding why all these kids were now calling her, and why she thought it was unfair that GTE wanted to charge her to change her longtime phone number "because of a record they played on KEE".

It makes one wonder whether the same thing has happened with other phone numbers in song titles.

Pennsylvania 6-5000 was used as the order number to attend Glenn Miller concerts and dances
in the late 1930's. It would work for 867-5309 if Jenny was a hooker.

Should be, but it depends on where (681) 867 is assigned. March 28, 2009 is when (681) goes online as an overlay area code. Another possibility is to watch the Berkeley Springs area. That's where (304) 867 is allocated now. The "5000" series hasn't been assigned yet, but once a carrier is determined for that block, you might contact them ...
