Lincoln police have arrested a mother for 22 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after she bought two kegs of beer for her underage daughter and her friends.
Officer Katie Flood said Cheryl Beckner was arrested Sunday after officers received an anonymous call there was a party with minors at her home at 5501 Locust.
When officers arrived at 1:30 in the morning, Flood said they found 22 minors ranging in age from 15 to 20 years old and two kegs of beer purchased by Beckner. Flood said all 22 minors received citations for MIP and inmates of a disorderly house.
Beckner was cited and released for maintaining a disorderly house, 22 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and 2 charges of keg registration violation for tearing the registration tags off of the kegs.
Flood said there was so much alcohol in the home that the breathalyzers used by officers recorded a .03 just from the air.
The house blew a 0.03. What a party!

That sounds like a statement fit for the Mythbusters. I love their drinking myths.genlock wrote:Flood said there was so much alcohol in the home that the breathalyzers used by officers recorded a .03 just from the air.

Breathalyzers CAN be affected by an ambient atmosphere that contains fumes from alcoholic beverages.
Breathalyzers are required to sample room air and return a 0% Alcohol reading prior to testing.
If alcohol is detected in room air, the test is legally invalid.

It has always annoyed me greatly that you are an adult at 18 but yet you are considered a "minor" for some things until you're 21. My 21st birthday was many moons ago, but it seems like such a bizarre thing to say that someone is an adult for one thing but a minor for another. And don't get me started on the whole "charging a juvenile as an adult" approach to criminal law...genlock wrote:minors ranging in age from 15 to 20 years old

Mixed feelings here. When I turned 18, it was legal to drink beer but nothing more potent. The drinking age was raised a few years later due to significant and consistant documentation offered up by law enforcement, the court system, and anti-drinking groups like MADD. 18 year old weren't showing a great deal of responsibility in how they handled alcohol. The joke here is to go to any college town and find out how many 18, 19, and 20 year olds get absolutely shit-hammered several nights a week all semester long. There is no real-world access problem to people under 21 drinking alcohol. Getting drunk is viewed as a rite of passage among students, faculty, administrators, and bar owners. People under 21 can get beer, wine, or whatever from friends who make the buy, and almost every bar admits 18 year olds and then stamps their hands to "prevent the sale of alcohol to an underage person".Ace Purple wrote:It has always annoyed me greatly that you are an adult at 18 but yet you are considered a "minor" for some things until you're 21.
