I got the swarm treatment at Best Buy the last two times I was in one of their locations.

So I go into Circuit City tonight to pick up a new CD and find empty rack after empty rack....a young Circuit City-ite (probably a seasonal hire) asks if he can help me...I ask him where to find the "new release" CDs....obviously very green, he takes me toward the new DVDs, which also look a lot like empty racks...when I say "CDs" a little louder, he looks confused and then figures out I want these physical things that come with music on 'em....he's obviously trying really hard to find it for me even though he's not familiar with the title and hasn't put two and two together about those empty racks...I let him "help" me for awhile before leading him to the empty space where it should be...I thank him and head for the main desk to ask where the new releases would be....a guy who appears to be the store manager (perhaps even higher) doesn't even know if they've come in....a girl at the counter informs him no CDs and only three of the new DVD titles came in....he tells me to come back tomorrow.

CDs and DVDs not in for Tuesday.....you gotta be kiddin'.........

I imagine it won't be long before we stop in at the local Chevy dealership to kick the tires on a new Chevy and find no new Chevys.

Already happening in Philly. The dealers don't have the available funds to order new vehicles or purchase pre-owned cars at auctions.

Chevy is making cars, but dealers can't get them on the lots to sell them. I guess I am going to resort to duct tape to hold my current car together.

Oh! Ford had a brighter idea. Their best selling Mercury, the Grand Marquis is special order only and dealers are not allowed to stock them on the lots so that took away that need for Lincoln Mercury dealers to fill their lots with the best selling car in their lineup.

Yeah, right.....

I forgot to post the result of my trip back....yes, I did, in fact, go back a couple of days later and gave Circuit City another chance.

Same empty racks.

I headed right for the main counter again and asked for a raincheck. They don't do rainchecks....they give free shipping for internet orders of out-of-stock items....but not for CDs....they're "not set up for that."

I just stood there and looked stupid....I'm quite good at that. The girl went to the store's manager (who was off to the side talking on his cell phone) for instruction; the guy told her what she told me, which she told him that she did, so he turned his business card into a makeshift raincheck. I didn't really care....I was heading to Best Buy to get that purchase off the list as soon as we were done.

But there was something interesting about what the girl said when she came back -- she indicated that the non-delivery of CDs might have been company-wide.

Figures. My brother picked up a ram chip from a CompUSA store for $49.99, "marked down from $79.99". The same chip was less than $40 at Circuit City.

Circuit City Stores Inc. says it has reached an agreement with liquidators to sell the merchandise in its 567 U.S. stores after failing to find a buyer or a refinancing deal.

The second-biggest electronics retailer in the nation says in court papers it has appointed Great American Group LLC, Hudson Capital Partners LLC, SB Capital Group LLC and Tiger Capital Group LLC as liquidators.

Calls to the Richmond, Va.-based company and the liquidators were not immediately returned.

Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens gave the company permission to liquidate if a buyout was not achieved.

Wonder if Best Buy will move into Charleston now? I can't imagine it going too long without a full-fledged electronic store.

The biggest winner: Wal-Mart. If they would expand their electronic departments, they might even put the squeeze on BB.

I remember best buy failing in charleston at the end of the 90's it was over where big sandy is in southridge. was such a good store, but they've never been good enough to merit me driving clear to barboursville for anything. Hope something decent comes in to take its place though.. might swing by CC in charleston to see if tehres actually any deals to be had..

You may be thinking of Sun TV and Appliance, the most poorly run retail chain in the history of retail.

Wal-Mark always wins when these chains go out of business. Linens & Things, Circuit City, KB Toys...... all sell crap you can buy at Wal-Mark.

...Are liquidation sales good places to find bargains?
No. Most of the time the liquidator raises all the prices back to their original number and starts marking down from there, with the markdowns getting steeper week by week. He's still allowed to make big signs that scream 50% OFF!!!! even though that price at the time might be the same or even higher than the price before the liquidation. By the time prices actually get below what they were pre-liquidation, most of the inventory has been picked pretty clean. Except for the most dedicated bargain sleuths, liquidation sales are a ripoff.

When CompUSA closed all PA locations except the one near the Pittsburgh Airport, I went into the store in Philly a couple of times, but never found any real deals. When the chain closed for good 1 year ago, I completely skipped the sale and picked up any parts I needed at MicroCenter at St. Davids (near Villanova). This past July, I was amazed to find that many of the left over bits and pieces of CompUSA's inventory had actually been liquidated to MicroCenter where I picked up computer case wiring, USB cables, SATA cables, mounts, plus other misc. stuff for about a nickle on the dollar of original retail.

I have to say that I am surprised that Circuit City held on this long.
